Neria
It is believed that Neria was a more complete landmass in the Time Before - perhaps, some theorize, even one landmass. Historians form their careers in the hopes that they might one day find evidence of what life was like in the Time Before. Islands at high elevation show signs of having once been home to trees only grown in more temperate areas, and several landmasses end in cliffs made of dead coral, suggesting that they had once been submerged under water.
Now, through forces both past and active, the world of Neria is considered to be divided into two. Rather than other worlds that may be divided along the equator, Neria is separated more vertically. The Highlands is the collective name for the large number of landmasses floating several thousand feet above sea level. By contrast, the land left at its original elevation - or near enough to it - are called the Lowlands. Both of these regions have their own unique ways of living, having had to account for different factors and under different circumstances.
The Highlands
It is believed that when the gods died and reality changed forever, the force of such a cosmic event changed the landscape of Neria forever. It isn't yet known whether all of the floating landmasses of the Highlands were originally part of Neria's geography, or if the changes in reality created them from nothing. Many of the floating landmasses are held in place by natural forces, but there are some that have been created by artificers able to replicate the strange gravitational effects. However it is that the floating islands remain in the sky, that fact alone has caused the Highlanders to research advanced thaumocratic solutions to their unique problems. The need for trade and travel prompted the creation of airships, and the extreme weather and temperatures of higher elevations have led to infrastructure such as city shields and aetheric temperature interfaces, commonly known as ATIs (or Addies).Highland Regions
Usora. Home of the Usorian Thaumocracy, Usora is one of the larger floating landmasses. Usora floats 29,500 feet above sea level, making it one of the most elevated landmasses, as well. Many of the cliff-side city-states are plagued with fog, but those that live on the peaks of the mountains find that the cold is more relevant than the fog. Located within Usora is the Usorian Forge, a place of learning and manufacturing for those who wish to master the art of working with Corstones and aetheric resonance. Usora is considered to be one of the most thaumalogically advanced regions within the Highlands. Curious... there doesn't seem to be anything else recorded here. The Lowlands is the name given to the landmasses left behind when the gods caused the cosmic explosion, and despite containing more of the original land of Neria, is often considered the less advanced region - and, as a result, the less desirable region. Those that live in the Lowlands have had to adapt to the differences in aetheric reality just as the Highlanders have, but in different ways. Temperamental oceans necessitated the creation of world-drains, which are moat-like gaps put in place by magic to keep the sea from directly meeting the land. While not as advanced or ornate as the airships of the Highlands, those who find travel necessary in the Lowlands have had to create other ways to do so, as the oceans can no longer be crossed via ordinary ships.Lowland Regions
