Tillbit, the Long Winded Minstrel

The Gnome   Coming in at just 3 foot 4 inches tall (although he'll argue that he's actually 3 foot 5), Tillbit stumbled into his current career mostly by accident. Hailing from the seaside town of Eskovar, Tillbit would spend most of his time listening to the sea shanties of the incoming sailors an well as the traveling bard-of-the-week in the Busty Mermaid Tavern. That is, until his mother caught him dilly-dallying and threw a shell at his head to make him pay attention.   By the time Tillbit was in his mid-teens, he knew that the life a clam-harvester wasn't his calling in life. He needed to sing! After scrounging up what little copper he could, he bought his first instrument: a flute. As he played it, he quickly realized that he was a natural! All those hours listening to the music in the tavern were finally being put to good use. Tillbit's parents eventually realized that music was their sons calling, so they reluctantly allowed him to busk in the streets, as long as he got his chores done. He started gaining a name for himself around town, and eventually was able to buy a drum and a lute, his prized possession.   At age 19, he finally had his "big break" (or at least that's what he thought at the time). The owner of the Busty Mermaid, a gruff but kind white Dragonborn named Shosta, asked him to come in a play that night. The young Tillbit could hardly contain his excitement. After he has finished his work for the day, he gathered his instruments and headed to the tavern. He had been in here before, but this time it was different. This time he was entering as the headliner!   He had set up everything and had rehearsed hit set earlier in the day. That evening was just as busy as any night, but it might as well have been the grand concert hall in Voryn, the capital city. With the dozen or so patron, he started playing. He started with a sweet flute rendition of one of the many sea shanties he had heard over the years. This then flowed into a hard dancing tune where he played the base beat with his foot and played the lute at the same time.   Despite everything he did though, the patrons did not seem to pay him any mind. Were his songs too soft? Not soft enough? Too slow? Too fast? As he played, these thoughts ran through his mind. At one point these perseverations were so loud that he had barely heard that one of his lute strings had broken.  As he snapped out of his internal worries, he noticed that everyone in the tavern was looking at him.  At that moment, Tillbit panicked, broke out into a sweat, and let out a very loud...fart!   For what seemed like hours, silence filled the tavern.  Shosta put her hand to her head, partially embarrassed, but also feeling sorry for the young gnome.  What happened next would shape the career of Tillbit.  A low snicker started in the crowd, followed but more audible chuckles, then finally all the patrons were in an uproarious laughter.  After a few moments of embarrassment, his anxiety seemed to melt away.  He thought to himself "this may not be what I strode out to do with my music, but the people love it!".  He regained his composure, picked up his flute, and started playing again, although this time, he accompanied it with another...instrument.  By the end of the night, the mostly drunken patrons had given him quite a few tips and returned to their ships with a tale of a musical act of a different nature.   The Tales   Being that Tillbit was performing in a fishing town, with ships constantly coming in and going, word of his unusual act traveled all throughout Faydenwold and beyond.  After a few months he began receiving invitations to other taverns.  He started small, going only a few days away to the nearby towns, but as his popularity grew, so did his travel distance.  The gigs also started becoming more prestigious.  It is said he was invited to more than one of the wealthy merchant houses of Ave as well as one of the Wills themselves asked for a private audience.   Where ever he traveled, he would be greeted by fans who would swarm his wagon, which was brightly colored and had painted on the sign "Tillbit, the Long Winded Minstrel!".  He would sometimes play impromptu performances while traveling on the road to weary travelers.  In addition to his pay and tips, he would often receive other gifts, mainly cabbage and beans, in order to...fuel his inspiration.   He had also received many offers to become part of adventuring parties, but he always politely turned them down.  While he did enjoy being on the road and performing, his music had no magical properties.  As a self taught musician, he did not tap into the arcane like those bards who went to their respective colleges.  Tillbit was content with this, however.  His joy was from the smiles and laughter from his fans, not from glory of battle.   The Legends   Even though Tillbit was but a humble traveling bard, his fame did come with certain myths about supposed exploits.   One involved the wooing of a lake nymph.  As the legend goes, he had stopped by a small lake on the road to let his horse have a drink.  He did not know that it was the residence of a lake nymph, who took offense to this beast fouling her waters.  Before she could unleash a curse, Tillbit took out his flute and played for her, with the accompanying...back up band.  Her anger turned to laughter and all was forgiven.   Another involves Tillbit being caught in between two warring gangs in a far off city.  In a case of wrong place, wrong time, his wagon pulled out into a street where a brawl was about to occur.  Knowing how music can tame the savage beast, he pulled out his lute and did a full song in the middle of the street.  This confused the two gangs long enough for the guards to come and arrest all involved.  It is said that he was made a honorary captain of the guard of that city.   Of course, Tillbit denies all of these stories.  But some say if you are able to get a peak into his cart when he is retiring for the night, you can see a strange medal hanging from the rafters.  A medal that look a lot like a military officer's medal that would belong to a captain...

I was wondering the entire time why he was called 'long winded' until I reached the part where it was explained. Pretty fun read with some nice related puns.   Small note: If you don't use the sidebar you can actually get rid of it in the 'sections' of the article :)

Well, that is certainly a unique performance style. His music may not be magic, but the ability to produce that much gas may be worth looking into...

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.
