Once a great empire that ruled the continent, the Sarthian Empire has fallen into decline. The Empire once stretched across the five corners of the continent, from the Stonemarch in the west to Mithralfast in the east and from Stormshore
in the north to Vardar in south and Sarthel on the southern coast. The Empire’s Capital was Sarth in Draco Serrata Mountain. The empress ruled here until an unknown event caused Sarth to mysteriously fall into ruin in a single night. After this, the capital was moved Sarthel. The land that was under Empire rule is now split into several regions, ruled by Barons, Kings, or tribal leaders of many different ancestries.
The world is shrouded in a dark age, between the collapse of the last great empire and the rise of the next, which might be centuries away. Minor kingdoms prosper, to be sure: baronies, holdings, city-states. But each settlement appears as a point of light in the widespread darkness, a haven, an island of civilization in the wilderness that covers the world. Adventurers can rest and recuperate in settlements between adventures. No settlement is entirely safe, however, and adventures break out within (and under) such places as often as not.
