Chief Rank/Title in Neon Blood | World Anvil

Chief

If there's one good thing about this whole biters armageddon situation, it's how politics sure have become a lot easier.
— Human Citizen

During humanity's downfall in the spread of Neonism, the established political systems fell with them. Quickly, all that was left of the red-blooded folk were small, isolated settlements out in the middle of nowhere. These small settlements had to find new ways to organise themselves, had to find new leadership. For now, this new leadership tends to consist of a single, trusted person leading the village in question.

Requirements

The requirements for the office of chief are not set in stone, and not always easy to determine. The person made chief tends to be the one people of a settlement trust the most, the one they deem the most dependable.

Appointment

The appointment of a new chief or mayor differs from settlement to settlement. Usually the procedure is quite informal. People do not tend to apply for this position, they are asked to fill it because of their reputation.

Responsibilities

A chief is the leader of a settlement in pretty much any kind of way. If important decisions have to be made, the chief has the final say. If there are arguments between citizens, the chief is the one asked to reconcile. If someone has committed what is considered a crime, the chief is asked to judge.

Benefits

For a position of this importance, there are fairly limited benefits to the chief. It is an office of honour, and that's what comes from it mostly: honour. A chief can only become one based on respect and they gain even more respect from excercising their office responsibly. If a chief speaks, they do not tend to be interrupted.

Accoutrements & Equipment

A chief does not require any signs of office. Due to the small size of leftover human settlements, anyone in their area of influence knows - and respects - their face.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The fact that respect is what gets a person into a chief's position comes with a flipside. If a chief abuses their power, if they behave in a way that is deemed unworthy of the office, they can quickly be challenged by a citizen who publicly doubts their ability to lead them.
