Also called Overlords, they average between 7 and 9 feet in height, and between 200 and 250 lbs in weight. They are spooky fast and terrifyingly strong. They have managed to develop a working relationship with the dominant flying saurians on Nemere called the Haudrac. Their habitat is on the highest mountain peaks, with subspecies preferring the subterranean dark. Their food of choice is human flesh per their religion.
Strong, fast, and incredibly intelligent, the varatu believe themselves to the pinnacle of Nature's design. Though they readily admit that humans came first, this is only on the basis that a stepping stone was needed to something greater. They have small torsos and long, lanky limbs. Their eyes are without iris or pupil, and come in a variety of colors that pulse in subtle rhythms to indicate emotion in pitch darkness. They can also switch between the total darkness of a deep down cave to the full brightness of a desert at high noon in about a minute.
Genetics and Reproduction
Varatu share a symbiotic breeding relationship with the feathered saurian race called the [Haudrac]. Four soft fertilized varatu eggs about the size of small watermelons are layed next to a single haudrac egg, which then fuse together, though internal barriers still separate them. This is then incubated beneath the haudrac brood mother, who's able to keep them sufficiently warm for the entire fifteen months required. (Prior to this, the varatu had an appallingly low birthrate of just under 5% after moving up from Nemere's stifling depths.) Upon hatching the haudrac immediately devours two of the varatu newborns while the other two are left to compete for their mother's milk until one of them inevitably dies of starvation.
Growth Rate & Stages
Like a newborn colt, a varatu enters life with the ability to walk. It weighs approximately thirty pounds and stands just under three feet tall. Over the course of thirty years, it will gradually reach its adult height of seven to nine feet. It will learn to speak at two months, while reading and writing will take around two years. Fully grown varatu do not go out into the world on their own until well into their thirties after a lifetime of servitude and apprenticeship.
Ecology and Habitats
They prefer to live on the highest mountain peaks.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Though they are omnivorous, the varatu prefer human flesh. This is primarily for religious reasons, as 99% of them follow the teachings of their prophet [Darut Maha'yir].
Their incredible potency comes at a price. The average varatu doesn't reach reproductive maturity until its mid-twenties. Of the twenty eggs it lays/fertilizes ten will be eaten by the accompanying haudrac. Of those ten, five will cause the deaths of their siblings through ruthless competition. Of those five, three will perish by disease, violence, or accident.
They separate themselves first between the clergy and non-clergy, then the latter are subdivided by occupation. These distinctions are marked by variances in clothing. Each occupation then has ranks rooted in competence, though these ranks all have the same names. Each family takes pride in being able to trace their lineage back to [Darut Maha'yir], and they're all keenly aware of their relationships to one another. They have many more words to describe relationships than humans do.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Anywhere above 10,000 feet.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Vision and touch are their primary senses, with olfaction coming in at a close second. Their hearing is about as good as a humans, though they're better at pinpointing the origin of any particular noise in echoing environments, such as cave complexes.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Symbiotic breeding relationship with the [haudrac].
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Their main tongue is called [High Ashrasti] by outsiders, and is spoken subvocally using a specialized set of vocal cords that resonate with one another to produce sympathetic vibrations that can be heard via bone induction. Its written form is meant to be etched into stone or metal. They have a low opinion of paper. Their secondary tongue is called [Low Ashrasti], which has no written form and is used to communicate with outsiders normally.
