Angel

An Angel is an elf that has a gift so powerful that they seem supernatural or otherworldly by comparison. Typically, these Gifts are overtly elemental and the bearer of the Gift can be referred to as an Angel of that element.
For example, elves born of the water find that the ability to manipulate water in some fashion is a relatively common gift with various restrictions. These elves commonly help divert water to crops, power machines using the flow of water, or freeze water to create ice, but may not be able to do much more with their Gift. An elf with this kind of Gift that has fewer restrictions or that is particularly powerful in scope would be considered an Angel of Water.
Because of their enormous power, Angels are typically watched closely by their home society and Council. This inadvertently discourages elves that could be classified as Angels from outing themselves.
To date, there are 10 known Angels in all of Elven History. There are two more living Angels that haven't been discovered or outed before the events of the book series. In the series, we will discover the 13th Angel.
When an Angel decides to use their abilities to the detriment of elvenkind, they become known as a Demon instead. Demons typically become an enemy of the people and necessitate special action from Council. In the previous age of war, some Angels participated in battles, requiring that they be countered by other Angels. This period of time heavily blurred the lines between Angel and Demon: Angels were the ones on your side of the battlefield and Demons were the other ones. All of the Angels that participated in war have been killed in action and Council decided not to reclassify them as Demons, since the central goal of improving elvenkind (which Demons knowingly work against) had not yet been established.
It should be noted that, even in times of war, a significant portion of Angels (4 of the 8 living at the time) decided not to get involved, believing their powers should be used to help people rather than kill and destroy.
It should also be noted that the First Elf, Lorien, was often depicted as an Angel of Life, but all of the details surrounding Lorien have been lost and transformed through the traditional stories about them. In all of the books written about Angels, Lorien is considered the first, regardless.
It has been said that, if True Magic exists, Angels would be the ones able to use it.

Qualifications

An elf becomes classified as an Angel when they have been observed to have the power to cause massive destruction or loss of life given the known limitations of their Gift and how it personally affects their stamina. In modern times, this is usually handled by a special group within Council.
