The World of Nareah

A Primer and General History

Note: This is a living document and as such is a constant work-in-progress.
The world of Nareah is a homebrow sword and sorcery fantasy setting of high-magic used in games for both Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons. It is a culmination of world-building done over the course of two completed campaigns and one currently on-going campaign; as such, it is still a work in progress, ever evolving as the players interact with and shape it with their stories.

A Brief History of Nareah

In the beginning, there was nothing. Around this point, for pretty much everyone in Nareah, it gets a little hazy. As a whole, there are few creation myths for the world - even in the sense of the gods, the world has always just been and few question that fact. The world was here yesterday and will be here tomorrow (hopefully) so the majority don't sweat the details of how it all came to be. None of the current gods seem to predate recorded history so, to the best of practically everyone's knowledge, there's no known information about the beginning.   About where it does pick up, however, is known as the Dawn of Civilization. Although modern records are patchy, somewhere in the neighbourhood of two to three thousand years ago, the first examples of civilization continuing to the modern day arise, building on the ruins of an older extinct civilization that had long since passed from the living record. These civilizations were formed by the earliest known form of the modern elves and were soon followed by the ancestors of the dwarves who began to build their fortresses in the mountains of the world.   After about a thousand years, the Dawn of Civilization abruptly ends with a great upheaval that shook the very world to its core, redirecting ley lines, tearing apart the continents as land sunk and previously submerged portions pushed to the surface, and just generally leaving little of the previous civilizations standing. The exact cause of the upheaval is unknown but its effects on the world are still felt today. In the wake of this Great Upheaval came the first records of divine beings.   The time following the Great Upheaval falls onto what is now called the Pre-Heresy Era of the Varandian Calendar and stretches for a period of almost two thousand years. Much of this time also remains shrouded in mystery, eventually seeing the rise of great empires in Estlund as humans appeared in the world and slowly began to displace the long standing demihuman races that had long dominated the world.   This period eventually ends with the pivotal event that is the Kazarian Heresy, concluding with the Godsmarch and the ascensions of the current pantheon of lesser deities - unlike the elder deities, these new ones had not yet achieved such power that they were forced to completely abandon their avatars on the Material Plane. The name of this event came to reference this new era, a time when gods walked among mortals on the world.   More than seven centuries have passed since and new nations have risen across the world. What the future holds none know but dark forces stir once again at the edges of world, intent on shaping that future in their image...

Continents of Nareah

Nareah is a sizeable world containing five major landmasses generally divided into multiple continents each.

Peoples of Nareah

Nareah is inhabited by a wide variety of races and species, a number of which have the intelligence and sapience sufficient to have a sense of self. In metagame terms, these races are typically able to be races selectable to be player or non-player characters (though such choices are limited by the gamemaster on a campaign-to-campaign basis).
