Land
Townships
Most of the citizens of Tariksan live in townships. These are areas of land under the control of a Lord, and are almost autonomous, at the disgression of the king.
Requirements
A township must be safe. Any wild land within it's borders should be patrolled, and criminal activity must be low. This is done by a local militia under the pay of the lord, who extracts taxes from his people in exchange for their safety. Any township land that fails these requirements becomes national land under the control of the king. This can just be for a few months, but has been permenant. On each of the roads into the township, there must be a 'gate'.
Gates
These are usually arched structures that go over roads, and are bound by certain rules. The specific rules of the township must be pasted, in common, on every gate, along with the name of the township. If the township welcomes "believers in the arcana" (ie. anyone who thinks that magical power comes from the arcana, whether or not they follow a god) then it will have the symbol of the arcana clearly at the top of it. Townships wishing to persecute those with certain religious or magical beliefs are permitted, but they cannot display this symbol. There must be at least ten paces between gates, and they must lie on the border of the township.
National land
National land is the majority of the rest of the land, and is controlled by the King and the national guard. Usually it is wild lands not yet settled by anyone, and the national guard attempt to tame it, and make it viable land for a new township. However, there are other kinds of national land, considered the more important. Several ports are owned by the king, as well as the long plain, where gatherings are held. The crossed roads, two of the most important roads in the country that run north-south and east-west (crossing at Astora) are nationally owned, as is Astora itself.
National land is important, as it is considered as belonging to Tariksan by the other nations. The empty mountains are not currently national land, and can be freely claimed by anyone.
Honour land
The rarest kind of land is honour land: land within Tariksan's borders that it holds no control over or obligation to, other than what is outlined in a treaty that was drawn up when it became honour land. This is usually within national land, and consists of strongholds and groups of races who wish to be allowed to continue to live by the old ways. Druidic circles and the dragon Rashtabar have also negotiated honour land in the past.
The name was given 140 years ago, after a king who did not respect the treaties protecting these lands invaded and mistreated many.
Red roads are national roads, making up Tariksan's crossroads
Orange roads are major roads maintained by the township lords, or by the national guard if they are in national land.
Dark blue land is township land
Light blue land is national/honour land
