Story of the dutiful daughter

An elderly farmer lived with his only daughter; his wife (the daughter's mother) had passed away a long time ago and all of the farmer's other children had long since married and moved away. Only the one daughter remained to care for him.
When the old man finally passed, the daughter felt like she had no purpose left in life, having no friends and no trade. Overcome by grief and loneliness, she passed away, herself.
Unfortunately, her spirit lost the way to the afterlife and her ghost haunts the city to this day, searching for her father.
There are competing interpretations of this ghost story. To some, the daughter is to be commended for her dedication. To others, she is scorned for her lack of purpose. Similarly, the old farmer is either kind, but unfortunate, or selfish in the extreme.
