Wheelchair

Wheelchairs have existed in Mythria for nearly as long as carts have but these devices were a far cry from what we consider a wheelchair to be nowadays. For most of wheelchairs were exactly as their name implied, wheels attached to the side of a chair, these were not provided by medical facilities and had to be handmade typically by taking a rocking or dining chair and haphazardly affixing often oversized cart or carriage wheels. Nobles and Royalty however could afford to have custom made wheelchairs built for them, their seats were cushioned, their wheels were often decorated with jewels and patterns, but fundamentally wheelchairs all faced the same problem - verticality, great upper body strength is needed to go up slopes and there were few effective ways to stop going down slopes, one popular option was to carry to staff or branch and jam it into the ground to act as an anchor, or if there are no other options grab onto the wheels, an action that can be very painful if the wheels are turning too fast.   A way some got around the wheelchair's limitations was to convert it into a carriage of sorts, allowing the chair to be pulled by a beast of burden when outside, usually a smaller one like a donkey or pony or in the case of halflings - riding dogs. Magic users of many types also found ways around the wheelchairs limitations by inscribing runes into the chair and speaking command words to make the chair move and stop based on their command words, there was even a wind wizard who became so learned in both runes and wind magic that they were able to make a wheelchair that could fly!   Everywhere people adapted found ways to overcome their mobility issues but the situation was far from perfect and it remained that way for over one thousand years. Just under one hundred years ago the modern wheelchair was invented. It was created via a combined effort of Burann Blackhammer - a former dwarven miner who was forced to give up his beloved job after he lost the use of his legs in a mining accident but was able to start a new life after finding a passion for machines eventually leading him to become an inventor and Najila Abaza - A human doctor who became impassioned to the lives of wheelchair bound people easier after her daughter was born with a malformed leg making it very hard for her to walk. Though they came from two different backgrounds they were able to combine their knowledge together to make the first of the wheelchairs we see most commonly today, with a self balancing mechanism, a seat that is both comfortable and supports the back and a brake allowing for quick and safe stops. This design has gone almost unchanged since it's creation and all countries apart of the World Alliance are required to provide these wheelchairs free of charge to any and all who need them if they can provide them.   In the last decade there has been a growing demand for mana wheelchairs, much like the magical wheelchairs of old they are able to move, stop and even turn at the pull of a lever (command word variants are also available to those unable to use a lever) but unlike the the old magical wheelchairs you need no magical ability or attunement in order to use the wheelchair as the mana crystal provides all the magic power needed. In some of the most technologically advanced cities these wheelchairs are slowly being provided to those who need them just like the standard wheelchair though the process of making these is quite slow and very expensive, in addition to the mana crystal someone skilled in rune crafting must carve the appropriate runes and mana lines into the chair to allow the lever to connect to the mana crystal and the wheels and preform the correct action though you would never see these runes unless you took the wheelchair apart to look at it's inner workings. In spite of this there are high hopes that the processes needed to make mana infused items will become simpler and cheaper in the coming years maybe someday all who need wheelchairs will have access to a mana wheelchair.

Inventor(s)
First wheelchair - unknown. Modern wheelchair - Invented by Burann Blackhammer and Doctor Najila Abaza. Mana wheelchair - Dozens of people contributed to it's design, notable among them is Qadira Abaza, whose mother co-invented the modern wheelchair.
Access & Availability
While everyone has the right to a wheelchair like most things nobles aren't satisfied unless they can show off their wealth and often commission custom made wheelchairs just like they have done since wheelchairs had first come about, with all the same adornments of the past, perhaps now with a golden trim. It's not a bad thing though as it takes them out of the waiting list for a free wheelchair and frees it up for people who couldn't normally afford one.   In all countries part of the World Alliance modern wheelchairs are attempted to be provided to those who need them, but the vast majority of places still only have access to medieval (Or sometimes even earlier) technology so the process is as slow to integrate as it is for any other piece of technology but the future does seem hopeful.
