Kephalos of Phokis

Grc: Κέφαλος - En: Cephalus

Prince Kephalos was a son of King Deion and Queen Diomede of Phokis. Kephalos was betrothed to Prokris, daughter of King Erektheus and Queen Praxithea of Athens. However, Kephalos was kidnapped before the marriage could be consummated (purportedly by the goddess of dawn, Eos). He was not able to return to Prokris for eight years.   On his return, he decided to disguise himself until he was sure Prokris was still faithful to him. He tried to seduce her, under an alter ego, but she rejected his advances.   Prokris fled into the forest, where she encountered Artemis, who informed her that her husband had indeed returned, that she had passed his test, and that the pair would be married. Artemis gave the couple two wedding gifts: a javelin that never missed; and Lailaps, a hunting dog that always caught its prey. All was happy, at first, but soon afterward, while Kephalos was hunting with his new javelin, he was surprised by Prokris and killed her with the javelin.   Distraught, Kephalos sent himself into exile. After wandering for a long time, he joined up with Amphitryon in a campaign against King Pterelaus of the Taphian pirates of the island of Taphos. After a successful campaign, Amphitryon went off to marry Alkmene while Kephalos remained, assumed control of the islands, and eventually remarried. The island of Samos was renamed Cephallenia in his honor, and the residents of islands under his control came to be known as Cephallenians.   However, Kephalos never managed to recover from the death of Prokris. He suffered from depression and committed suicide by falling from a cliff into the sea.
