The neighborhood of Kadmeia is the oldest in Thebai, established by Kadmos within the Old Wall that encircles the two highest hills of the city. Kadmeia surrounds the Citadel of Kalydnus on the lower portion of the citadel hill.
Kadmeia is made up of over a hundred head-houses of the Spartoi oikoi that administer the estates of the kingdom. These are divided into five wards, each of whose leaders claim continuous bloodline with one of the five original Spartoi warriors: Chthonius, Hyperenor, Pelorus, Udaius, and Echion. Each ward has a gate into the citadel and a hierarchy by which the most important oikoi are highest on the hill while the least important are at the lower side.
The noble houses are miniature palaces of blocky construction with slitted windows, terracotta roofs, and a gated entry leading to an inner courtyard. These are surrounded by smaller servant homes and support buildings. Some okoi have adopted crests which are set on banners of their bloodline colors.

Defences

Built for the defense of the citadel in the case of a break in the Old Wall, arrows can be shot downhill from slitted windows while objects are thrown down on invaders from the rooftops.
