Aigean and Anatolian Settlements

The Sporades are "scattered islands" in the Aigian, formerly under Kretan control but increasingly Hellenic. Also, settlements have been established in Anatolia, an increasing source of friction with the Hittite Empire.

Cyclades

[Grc: Κυκλάδες]

An island group in the Aigean Sea, southeast of mainland Hellas. The name refers to the islands "around" (κυκλάς) the sacred island of Delos. The islands are peaks of a submerged mountainous terrain, with the exception of two volcanic islands, Milos and Santorini. The largest and most fertile island of the Cyclades is Naxos.   Delos and its surrounding islands were home to a thriving island civilization before the rise of Krete and its conquest of the islands early in the Fourth Age.   Agricultural products include emmer and wild-type barley, sheep and goats, pigs, olives and olive oil, and tuna speared from small boats.   Major Islands:
