Cleansing Shrines Plot in Mythic Kamakura | World Anvil

Cleansing Shrines

As the Yuan Army ransack the countryside, they are desecrating the Holy Sites of Tsushima.   Corrupted Shrines become unhallowed, desecrated ground. They are marked by the corrupted Torii gates that are now acting as gateways to Yomi. As such, the taint and corruption are pouring out into the world. There are rumors of dead wandering the ravaged countryside and oni and yokai stalk the besieged populace. Slaying the demons as they come across them will only be a temporary measure. To save the island, the party will need to close the gates.   Closing the gates requires a combination of actions. Removing any physical causes of corruption, such as corpses, is the first step. Then they will need to perform the Purification rites to cleanse the site.   Chiyoko Adachi can perform the rites, but she will not be able to kill any oni or yokai trying to stop her. She needs to perform a Kagura dance, uninterrupted and have the appropriate materials; Sea Water and Jade.   There are a total of 16 Shrines on Tsushima that the players may wish to investigate.

Becoming Tainted

Initial exposure to a tainted place or tainted object gives a character 1d4 points of taint. No save.   For every 24 hours spent in a tainted place, or spent carrying a tainted object, a character must make a Fortitude saving throw. The base DC is 10, +5 for every consecutive 24 hours of exposure. Multiple simultaneous exposures (such as carrying a tainted weapon in a tainted place) increase the DC by +5 per source of exposure every 24 rounds. If the character fails his saving throw, his taint score increases by 1.   A character's taint score applies as a penalty to his Constitution and Wisdom Scores.

Resisting Taint

Jade absorbs taint and thus protects those who are exposed. A 'finger' of Jade costs 100gp.As the Jade absorbs taint, it darkens, softens. Once it has absorbed seven hits of taint it rots away. Possessing multiple taint-absorbing items at the same time can protect a character for longer than seven hits, but the benefit does not accumulate indefinitely, as shown on the following table.
Items Possessed Taint Absorbed
1 7
2 12
3 15
4 16
5 15
6 12
7 or more 1

Healing Taint

The healing magic of the Shinto and Buddhist healers can reduce the Shadowlands Taint, helping to restore the natural balance of energies and flow of ki within a Tainted individual. A remove disease or remove curse spell is the obvious choice, but even these spells are limited in their ability to remove the Taint entirely. Neither spell can eliminate the Taint, but either will reduce the target's Taint score by 3, but never below 1.   A heal spell reduces a character's Taint score by 3, but never below 1.   No other spell, including wish or miracle, can reduce a character's Taint score, except by duplicating the effects of the above mentioned spells.
