Apollo and the Moirae

They weave and weave the tapestry of fate, spinning each life string and weaving it into the picture that is our being. They are even feared by the gods, because the hold the power to cut the string that is your life. Only one god dared to challenge them to give his power foresight to the humans.
The details of this telling vary, but they all agree that it was a very risky move of Apollo to try and steal the sight of Clotho. It is widely known that Apollo is the god that has learned to hone his foresight by Thrinae - the nymphs that raised him. It is said that he wanted to give this gift to the much frailer humans, so they would be able to take their own fate into their hand and not only exist as a tool to amuse the gods. Humans back then were completely at the gods back and call and had to play along in every shenanigan the gods thought of. Apollo thought this was wrong as humans were just as capable of thought and feeling as the gods, they just lacked the powers and abilities the gods had.
So he decided to steal the sight of Clotho and give it to a priestess, so she could help humanity find its way. He got into the grotto that housed the Moirae and searched the eye that was supposed to hold the sight of the Moirae. It took him quite some time, but in the end he found it in the hands of the sleeping crones. As he came  closer he could see it staring at him. As he grabbed for it the three awoke and he took of as fast as he could, accompanied by their screeching screams and protests. Only an interventions by Zeus on behalf of his son stopped Atropos from cutting Apollos string and destining him to die.
He brought the eye down and into the city of Delphi, giving it to the current high priestess. The sight of the fate was transferred to her in a ritual that to this day is used to transfer the powers from one priestess to the next. Each priestess is chosen by Apollo himself, who gives them a weak version of his power that then is strengthened by the power of the eye of the fates.
