The Avenging Angels

The Epoch of Peril was a time if terrors, of dangers, of fiends and monsters. Of…heroes?  In the midst of a lawless, chaotic time when every man was left to fend for himself, a ragtag group of people just doing their best to survive found themselves in the unlikely position if providing hope to all who dared whisper their names. Once ordinary nobodies, The Avenging Angels would go on to pass into legend as the group responsible for finally sealing the breach and sealing away Tirzaan’s hordes once and for all. Though most of them would lose their lives in the conflict, they would be rewarded with immortality in any city which included a shrine or monument dedicated to those few brave souls who dared to stand in the way of unimaginable horror.

Structure

The Avenging Angels were a loose band of many different backgrounds and as such had no real hierarchy. Veren was universally regarded as the leader, though it was a title he had little interest in holding, and those closest to him were generally considered to have the most clout, but no real orders were ever given, nor expected to be obeyed. Even after the closing of the void, the Angels refused  to form some sort of organizational structure, continuing on much as they had before.

Culture

The Avenging Angels was comprised of a ragtag gang of tough individuals. Survivors, who somehow found a home together. Some were seeking companionship, many revenge, and all to avenge some loss which had been suffered at the claws of the ruling demons. As such, they were rowdy, often flippant about terrible acts, and prone to acts of mutiny and violence. The only thing they respected was Veren, who gained their admiration and obedience through the legend that had brought them all together. They quarreled with each other as often as with others, but were quick to jump to the defense of any they perceived as their own.

Public Agenda

To destroy as many fiendish terrors as they could, thereby avenging the many wrongs dealt to those of mortal blood.

History

Veren the Avenger embarked on a one-man crusade sometime around 5678, vowing to do as much damage to the fiendish hordes as he could before his inevitable death. He continued on his lone mission for approximately three years, performing greater and greater acts of daring that inspired many to whisper cautiously hopeful stories of an Avenging Angel sent to harry the fiends. An acknowledgement from the gods at long last. The stories inspired several brave individuals to begin resisting as well, leading many to their unfortunate doom, but hardening others and creating survivors and fighters. Some of these eventually began to search for Veren and gathered around him despite his protests. There is no official date for when the Angels officially became a group, but their numbers continued to grow slowly but surely. With increased numbers and careful strategy, the Angels quickly became a real threat to many fiends and were forced to move their camp many times. Approximately eight years after Veren began his crusade, he was joined by self-taught voidomancer Shiev, who quickly became one of the only people who could truly say they were close to Veren. The addition of voidomancy to the team caused some dissension in the Angels’ ranks, leading to a short-lived mutiny that threatened to tear the Avenging Angels apart. But Shiev would ultimately prove to be an invaluable resource and one of the ties that bound the Angels together. After nearly twenty years of fighting and hiding, an unnamed Angel managed to come across some information that gave them a shot at closing the void once and for all. The conflict was long and bloody, and ended the lives of most of the Angels, but by the end of it all, the deed was done. The few remaining Angels were then instrumental in helping to protect the fledgling civilization as well as guard the secrets of the void to prevent anything like this from happening again.

Disbandment

The remnants of the Avenging Angels refused to add any new members to their ranks so they were always doomed to eventually die out. However, it was the formation of the Steel Assembly and the eventual outlawing of voidomancy which really spelled doom for the Angels. The remaining members were more close knit than ever before and steadfastly refused to support a regime which threatened Veren’s closest remaining friend, Shiev. There was a tense confrontation with members of the Assembly which ended with Shiev agreeing to remain confined to one building. The Angels disbanded soon after.
