Holidays

Longest Night:   The day before and after the Winter Solstice is traditionally used to honor Merialn as this is the longest night of the year. The first day is usually spent with family, giving gifts and holding a bonfire under her stars while singing songs to the heavens. The second is spent with friends, feasting, giving gifts, and singing uplifting songs.  Some kingdoms have turned this into a bigger holiday where the populous travels to the capital city or castle to celebrate together with the Royal Family. In these cases the Royal Family hands out small gifts to all in attendance and those attending return the favor to the family and bring gifts for their friends who attend.

History

In the sacred texts, Saethja is often ascribed as being the sister of Merialn. (Many followers of Merialn contend that Saethja is a daughter of Merialn instead.) In some tales, Saethja and Merialn are parted over a rivalry for the same lover. In other stories, Saethja and Merialn are separated by some great calamity. Sometimes this calamity is caused by the trickery of their would-be suitor. Whatever the case or the cause, there is a gulf of longing and loss between Saethja and Merialn, and this is why the tides chase the moon. It is also said that starfish are a gift from Merialn to Saethja when stars fell from the night sky into the waters of the sea.
