Vampire
13 February 2018 CE
Vampires are sophontic, humanoid creatures that feed on the blood of other living creatures. Although they can subsist on the blood of animals, vampires gain more nutrition from the blood of other sapient creatures, as they actually feed on the life essence of the creature and not on any physical substance. Vampires are not easily distinguishable from the humans they were turned from, although they do have a few unique features. These features include elongated canine teeth, iridescent eyes, and the ability to change shape into a bat, corvid, or canine. The alternate form of a vampire depends largely on the person's personality and identity.
Contrary to popular belief, vampires are neither dead nor undead, although the catatonic state they enter into for a few days after being turned can easily be mistaken for death.
Basic Information
Genetics and Reproduction
Vampires are capable of reproducing with humans, but not with other vampires. Any offspring are completely human in nature. All vampires are made via a process known as turning, which involves a human making a blood pact with a vampire. Blood pacts involve the drinking of vampire blood by a human, and ritualistic vows.
Growth Rate & Stages
A vampire's aging process stops soon after their turning, but their hair and nails continue to grow. In fact, it is believed that vampire cells continue to replicate as normal, but lack the cause of aging after their turning. The belief holds that aging is "paused" during the period shortly after turning where the new "fledgling" vampire is near-comatose.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Vampires need to ingest roughly a liter of blood per day if obtained from sapients, or one-and-a-half liters per day if from animals. Vampires rarely hunt for their food in the modern day, instead relying on government programs or butchers for their meals.
Most Eurasian governments let vampires drink the excess blood from blood drives or nearly-spoiled blood from blood banks. Spoiled or near-spoiled blood does not have nearly as much nutritious qualities for vampires, and they must drink one-and-a-half liters of it to sustain themselves for a day.
