Kanna an Hindar

Lady Kanna Halnalsdottir, an Hindar (She/Her)

Kanna an Hindar is a Skelligan sorceress and the guardian of Hindarsfjall. As a servant of the Jarls, she allies with the Northern Kingdoms and fights for them in the war. She is also considered an ally to the Witchers of Kaer Morhen, through her loyalty to Cerys an Craite, Ermion, and Geralt of Rivia.
Though she is the sister of a high-ranking Nilfgaardian court sorcerer, she is considered a public political enemy to the Nilfgaardian Empire due to a personal scrap between herself and another sorcerer in Emhyr var Emrys's court.

Physical Description

Body Features

In Aretuza, Kanna learned how to heal her wounds and scars. However, with Skelligan respect deeply drilled into her, she chooses to bear her scars proudly as a gift from the gods. Unless a wound threatens her life or work, she will not heal it.

Special abilities

Kanna is exceedingly gifted in ecomancy, and often uses it to grow magical herbs used to create healing potions, salves and poultices. She will also use her magic to bend a terrain to her will, using rocks, trees and plants in both defensive and offensive ways. She's also able to communicate with most intelligent animals, and by use of polymorphism, can take the form of a hawk.

Apparel & Accessories

She wears a hangerok and smock, along with a golden amulet depicting an old Druid symbol. Her hangerok is a deep ocean blue with fern green embroidery that matches the embroidery on the sleeves of her smock, each color honoring the goddess and her clan. A matching ribbon is often braided into her hair. She wears leather belts holding a poultice, three leather bags, and several crystals.
During the winter, she wears the pelt of a small bear tied at her chest to keep warm. While visiting Chelette in Novigrad, she wears a heavy green taffeta cloak, hiding her face and clothes from the public.

Specialized Equipment

In combat, she uses a staff made of the wood of the sacred ash tree, Yggdrasil. Its branches hold a chunk of crystal, deep green and glowing with her touch. Blackberry bramble also winds around her staff, kept alive by her magic. The bramble's growth seems to react to her emotions, bearing flowers or fruit when she is happy, and becoming brittle with her more negative emotions.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Kanna was born to a priestess in the sacred garden of Hindar, and it is commonly believed she was given her magic by the goddess Freya. At the age of ten, she began to show signs of chaos, and was sent to Aretuza the next year. It was here that she met Chelette, another sorceress, becoming fast friends. She also became close to her half-sister, Erlara, staying at her side when Chelette wasn't present.
Chelette graduated early, leaving Kanna to make new friends. Unfortunately, she fell in with the wrong sort, befriending a another Skelligan sorcerer called Eigvirn. She was unable to see the manipulation he was putting her through, dramatically altering her personality to be more hostile and politically charged. She let go of her love of creative arts, dropping poetry and scribing entirely, much to her mother's disappointment.
After graduating Aretuza, She returned home to Hindar, keeping constant contact with Eigvirn, who had left for the Nilfgaardian court. Through this, she kept close with Erlara, eventually bringing her to live in Hindar for a while while the latter dealt with abuse at the hands of her mother. She fell into low contact with Chelette, seeing her time better served to aid Eigvirn. She continued to play into his hands, as he was the only other friend she had aside from Chelette. After several years of tumultuous friendship, she set a handful of barriers regarding Eigvirn's lover, he tired of her, and began spreading word in Nilfgaard that she was a national enemy. This effectively banned her from Nilfgaard, as she feared for her safety when entering. Once Erlara returned to Nilfgaard, this caused them to cease most forms of contact.

Education

Kanna, like all royally appointed sorceresses, was trained at Aretuza, and though she faltered in most metaphysical magic, she is very gifted in alchemy, healing, and ecomancy.
She also trained under the Druid, Ermion, which certified her as a novice druid. She adored the bardic side of druidism, becoming talented at writing poems and tales of heroics, warriors, myths and magic.

Employment

After graduating from Aretuza, Kanna declined a spot in the Lodge, instead going home to work as an advisor to Jarl Donar an Hindar and governess to Otrygg an Hindar. In this, she was seen as family, and was allowed the title of an Hindar herself. She also occasionally works under the Druid Ermion, aiding them in any magic they cannot achieve on their own.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Up until the second Nilfgaardian war, Kanna was motivated solely by protecting the seven jarls of Skellige. However, with Black Ones steadily approaching their shores, she found herself contacting the Brotherhood and Lodge, as well as making consistent trips to Novigrad to check on Chelette. Due to her loyalty to Cerys an Craite and Ermion, she also serves Geralt of Rivia and Cirilla Fiona Elen Rhiannon whenever asked.
In addition to these goals, she actively avoids Nilfgaard, and has vowed that she will offer her services (healing or otherwise) to neither Eigvirn nor his lover.

Vices & Personality flaws

Kanna is extremely susceptible to overstimulation, and requires a good amount of mead in order to attend Chelette's performances at the Kingfisher. Noises, textures and smells can set her off, leaving her to be snappy and mean during breakdowns.

Hygiene

Kanna uses a Glamarye smelling of roses and honeysuckle, both to act as a perfume and to keep her looking young.

Social

Religious Views

As she believes Freya gave her her magic, and because of her mother's Priesthood, she is loyal to the Goddess Freya. She bleeds herself to the Goddess each time she returns home, and partakes in all of her rituals. She also blessed Geralt of Rivia by proxy for ridding her garden of Morkvarg.

Social Aptitude

For brief periods, she is able to act very charismatic. However, she quickly tires of people she does not feel close to, and after an hour or two will shut down and close herself off, really only able to be reached by Chelette. She also has extreme trust issues due to her dealings with Eigvirn, and in turn, is extremely secretive.

Hobbies & Pets

In Hindarsfjall, she has a large black dog she calls Fenrir. He is very sweet, and stopped aging around seven due to an experimental form of her healing magic.

Speech

Like all Skelligers, she speaks in a mix of old Skelligan and Common, commonly referred to as Skelligan Jargon. She can at points come across as quite formal, but at other times, can hardly be understood by those who aren't familiar with the Jargon.

History

Chellette met Kanna on their first day at Aretuza. She quickly noted Kanna's shyness and social anxiety, and pulled her aside to frankly tell her that they were now friends. Young and eager to be wanted, Kanna simply agreed, and their relationship blossomed from their. While studying, they briefly courted, though this ended when Chelette ran across Gavil, a soon to be Witcher training at Kaer Seren. Though this break put a temporary damper in their friendship, it was quickly mended, and they became just as close as they were before.
Though Chelette graduated early, she decided to stay behind and continue her studies until Kanna caught up with her, not wanting to leave her alone with no true friends. After this, Kanna was sent home to Hindar to serve Jarl Donar an Hindar, and Chelette joined Foltest's court below Triss Merigold. They kept frequent contact throughout this time, though were only truly able to communicate through Megascope and small meetings on special occasions. They made it a habit to attend all sorts of Masquerades together, including the Vegelbuld's parties.
Once Temeria dissolved, and Chelette was left without any true safehaven, the two used portals to visit each other in person much more often and check in with each other. Donar an Hindar forbid foreigners to stay in Hindarsfjall, so they tended to meet wherever Chelette was. These visits were forced to become slightly more infrequent upon Chelette's move to Novigrad, as it wasn't safe for Kanna, a known sorceress, to be there. They were forced to meet in secret, though this did not stop them from checking in on each other.

History

Kanna and Gavil met only briefly in their youth, when Chellette of Sodden Left Kanna for the Witcher. This gave Kanna a hatred of Gavil, even after she mended her relationship with Chelette. She let it go after a few years, and once Chelette and Gavil moved in together in Novigrad, they became friends, though neither of them are particularly close to the other.

History

Kanna and Madaya met rather recently in the Kingfisher after Madaya aided Chelette of Sodden in a performance. They promptly got drunk together, bonding rather well and having a lengthy conversation of trauma and healing. The two aren't exceedingly close, but know lots about each other and their mental states, and are consistently checking in on each other.

History

Kanna and Nithan met by chance when the both of them were in Vizima on 'business' after the assassination of King Foltest. Kanna was in the city to visit with Chelette of Sodden after the court dissolved, while Nithan was there to eradicate the remaining human populous. They first met when Kanna wandered into the occupational Scoia'Tael territory to collect and grow various healing herbs. Nithan trained an arrow on her, and shot. The arrow buried itself into Kanna's stomach, and for any normal human, the shot would have been fatal.
Nithan assumed the sorceress to be dead, so allowed their eyes to leave her body while they climbed down the tree to loot her. They were surprised to see the girl had dragged herself to a tree, sat up, and removed the arrow from her gut. After a brief conversation, they found that Kanna was a sorceress that specialized in healing, and this was far from the first time she had been shot. She was surprisingly calm for someone who had just been ambushed. Feeling guilty for harming her rather than killing her, they gathered the herbs she needed to fix herself up, gave her a drink, and escorted her back to Vizima.
Being as they were rather far away from the city, and Kanna was just slightly delirious from blood loss and alcohol, the two learned a fair amount about each other. Nithan had never had a full conversation with a human up until now, having only killed them and listened to jeering and dying words. The conversation caused them to question their unwavering loyalty to the Scoia'Tael and hatred of humans, and upon hearing Kanna aided Iorveth's unit through Geralt of Rivia, they decided to ponder further on their views.
They spoke often over the time that Kanna stayed in Vizima, and became quite close. The two were loathe to leave each other, but they both had to return to their respective fights. Nithan set off to Vergen to win Saskia's war, and Kanna returned to Hindarsfjall to bate back the Black Ones on her shores.
The two communicated with letters and a stolen Megascope throughout the next two years. They fell in love rather quickly after Kanna ended her relationship with Ernida, though agreed that they wouldn't make anything official until their respective wars were over.
Once the war of the Pontar was over, Nithan returned to Flotsam, and ended up living within the city to increase their encounters with humans. However, their father was soon killed in a humanist attack, causing them to feel incredibly unsafe. Using their stolen megascope, they contacted Kanna, asking if they could come to Skellige for their own safety.
Kanna teleported Nithan to Hindar, and brought her to Ermion to request Nithan stay in the garden. The druid refused, but allowed Nithan to stay in the village below on the condition that they use their skills as an archer to protect the isle. Upon their agreement, Nithan permanently moved into a small hut below the garden, though they do frequently stay the night in the garden (unbeknownst to Ermion).
Upon finding out that Nithan was gifted in the arts, but didn't practice, Kanna began taking them to meetings of Druidic Bards in which she practiced storytelling. She told them that they could join if they wished, and got them into training to become a recognized druidic bard. As of now, Nithan is the only Elven bard in the circle of the Druidic Bards, and the other defender of the garden.

History

Kanna was born five months before her half sister in Skellige, and did not meet her properly until they both ended up in Aretuza. They both knew of each other's existence, but due to the way their parents avoided speaking of their father's former relationship, they'd never even spoken.
Erlara and Kanna met in Aretuza just before Chelette graduated ahead of them. They bonded within their architectural courses over Skelligan mythos of Sirens, Harpies and Echidnae, writing elaborate (yet bad) stories of the creatures for a large part of their childhood.
After their graduation, Kanna returned to Hindar, and Erlara returned to Nilfgaard. Erlara brought her mother into the Empire's court, hoping to provide for her and make her proud. However, her mother abused her horribly, and Erlara felt the need to flee. Kanna opened her home of Hindarsfjall to Erlara until she found her footing. They lived with each other in the garden for two years, before Erlara travelled to Vizima to stay with Chelette of Sodden.
Once Erlara returned entirely to the Nilfgaardian Empire, falling in love with a Nilfgaardian soldier, she nearly entirely cut off contact with Kanna. They occasionally communicated via Megascope, but other than that, their relationship effectively ended.

History

Evelien and Kanna met in Oxenfurt during a week-long tenure studying under the medic Shani. They, along with two other women, roomed together at the college. At this point in time, Kanna had assumed the false identity of Alka, seeing as she was a well-known royal sorceress. They first bonded over the closeness of their birthdays, but over that week, became exceedingly close after they consumed Mardroeme together and discussed existence, god and meaning of life.
Though the two were only in contact for a week, Kanna gave Evelien a surefire way to contact her and let her know she expected her to use it. It took several months, only after they had built a certain amount of trust, for Kanna to reveal her true identity. Hearing her experiences with chaos, as well as with her friend, Chellette, who was effectively trapped within Novigrad, lit a fire beneath Evelien to begin her revolution.
Seeing that the two were both publicly wanted in Redania, they thought it best that they limit their in-person meetings to a minimum. They mainly connect through letters or magical means.
