Friday Mosque

The Friday Mosque is the oldest mosque in Muddy Estuary, having been built just before the turn of the 19th century. It is a stately building located several streets away from the confluence of the Drum and Mud Rivers. The Friday Mosque is attached to a prison nearby, as is per custom. This "overnight stay" as it is locally known, is used to house minor criminals, negligent spouses and abusive husbands after a formal complaint has been made and proven during the daily justice hearings. Depending on the severity of the crime, they may be released the next day or held to perform community service, or forwarded to the police department for criminal action.

Daily Law Hearings

The Glowing Lands practice a mix of customary and criminal laws, with anyone being able to walk into a religious order or temple of their choice to seek justice. The only requirement is that the defendant must be a follower of the religion, for to punish a non-follower is otherwise cruelty. Every day except Friday, the Mosque hears cases and petitions, ranging from mistreatment of spouses (the most common) to delinquent children (second most common) and the occasional possession (not as common but also not as rare as one might expect). The petitions are usually filed the day before, though there have been exceptional and emergency cases where the petitions may be filed on the same day.   As the area within the mosque is quite large, up to three or more petitions can be heard simultaneously. There is a special, cordoned-off area for petitions involving marriages, and another for hearings regarding children. Sessions can begin as early as after the dawn prayers, which is useful for some petitioners who cannot afford to take the day off. Most of the petitioners are followers of the Crescent Faith, though there are a number of petitioners who are not. They, however, utilise the hearings to claim justice, particularly when it comes to matters of the heart and financial matters, as the Crescent Faith imposes a very strict criteria for their followers.   Thanks to its location and size, the Friday Mosque can hear up to an average of fifty petitions daily. They will immediately redirect petitions to another mosque if the waitlist is more than 2 days - in their opinion justice must be seen to be done swiftly, and so if the appointments look like it would be only be possible on the third day after the petition is submitted, they will immediately coordinate with another mosque to reduce demand. The only exception are weddings and engagements, which can be scheduled up to a year in advance, as well as funerals, which will usually take place on the same day.
