The Kozelle

High in the Drakainan Mountains live a colony of 25 Cenobites who are solely responsible for recording the myths, legends, and history of the Drakaina Tribe.  They tend to a herd of Kozelle who serve a myriad of purposes.   The Kozelle, similar to what we know as goats, are prized for their hides - their skin is known to be blemish free and easily stretched and scraped to create fine parchment. This is the only parchment the Cenobites are permitted to use since superstition holds that any other hide is not worthy of Drakaina Lore.  The Cenobites will not slaughter a Kozelle for its hide prior to its fifth year, following strict tenets of The Faith.     During the first five years of life, the Kozelle are offered to local farmers to help with clearing of fields. They have an incredible appetite, often clearing one hectare in just under three hours! Their dung is the richest fertilizer known to man and farmers who spread it in the soil with their seeds always reap plentiful crops. The mountain farmers are forever grateful to the Cenobites for the use of the herd - the clearing of the field AND the dung are nearly free.  Payment for use of the herd is simply this: one meal for the Cenobite colony during the harvest season.     Once a Kozelle reaches their fifth year and are ready for sacrifice, the Cenobites perform a cleansing ritual on each animal, they humanely slaughter the animal making sure to collect the blood in a special vat.  The blood is used in the Faithful Ink required to record events.  The meat of the animal is preserved in salt and feeds the colony throughout the harsh mountain winter.  Any flesh the Cenobites feel would be surplus and potentially wasted is given to those farmers who provided a meal for the colony that year.
