Magin

A fairly new race of Mother's children. They've been around for twenty or so generations.   Magin are native to swampland, and they were given many limbs to be able to adapt easily to shifting ground. They have two arms on their torso and six tentacles on the lower half of their body. Usually the six tentacles are paired together and movement is essentially tripedal, but in extreme uneven ground they can use all six to navigate. Their upper arms are far more flexible than most species', but they lack much physical strength in them. To carry large objects, wrapping it in lower tentacles is much more efficient.   They can have between one and nine eyes. Two and three are the most common, with the third being usually somewhere on the forehead. Coloring varies widely between individuals and isn't greatly genetic. Eyes can be black or any color of the spectrum, though red to yellow range is most common.   Every Magin is aligned to an element when they're conceived. They MUST consume that type of magic during their first year of life or they will die of starvation. They need their element again when they reach puberty - lack of sufficient magic during puberty results in stunted growth, misaligned limbs, and potentially being stuck in a prepubescent form forever. Outside of those two time periods, Magin can still consume their element of magic and can channel it back out through their hands or tentacles offensively.   There are tests that can tell the element that a child will belong to during pregnancy, with low accuracy at about two months and with high accuracy about seven months. It's considered an extreme faux pas to mention a pregnancy before it's announced, no matter how obvious it is. If the child is aligned to an element the parents cannot provide for them, abortion is done quickly and humanely to spare the baby the pain of starvation. Elemental alignment has no genetic component, so any pregnancy is a total crapshoot.   Due to this, Magin rarely use elements that are not common in battle. Water and wood magic are plentiful, so the rarer types are used to ensure as many children as possible grow up.   For the most part, the more common elements are also the more common conceptions. The major exception is lightning magic. Lightning babies are extremely common, but the magic itself is extremely rare. The vast majority of abortions are lightning babies.   Royals are not immune to the difficulties of finding proper magic. Money and power ease things a bit, but if something does not exist no amount of money will make it appear.   Magin society is highly structured. There are 48 castes, as well as several more castes that hold only a single person. Generally speaking, an apprentice is considered one caste lower and a master is considered one caste higher.   Magin structure is focused around both a royal family and a house of representatives. There is one high Lord or lady for every 16 castes, so three total - Lower, Middle, and Upper caste. If all three lords agree to something, it's a tie to a royal vote and the heir to the throne casts a tiebreak. Two lords are equivalent to an heir's vote. Lords are in office for twelve years. The first year they apprentice to the previous Lord who is in their final year. They then have ten years of acting alone, and finally they take an apprentice for their last year.   Changing castes is difficult but not impossible. One is placed in a caste at birth, and may enter another caste by marriage. One may also ceremonially cut all ties to their previous life and start anew in a different caste as an apprentice, though they have to have a willing master to take them in to do that.
