Needlewood

The name "Needlewood" can refer to a number of different concepts. It can be used as a proper noun to describe all of the forests of this type as one, singular entity. Indeed, there are some who believe that the forests are all connected in some mysterious way. And it can be used as a general term, describing a dense forested area consisting of coniferous trees. Such a forest might have a distinct, local name known to those who live in nearby havens and travel the surrounding area. But if a traveler from the other side of the world asked for a map or directions to the Needlewoods, the general term would serve adequately in place of the local, in most cases. 
The Needlewoods are covered in copses and thickets of Thrumming Pines, and are blanketed in snow and ice, though notably less than some of the surrounding areas, due to the small amount of heat that is generated by the pines. The forest floor in the Needlewood is blanketed in fallen needles at the rare moments when it is not covered in snow. The needles, which are sometimes coated in sticky sap, tend to get everywhere.

Geography

The wooded expanse can cover many geographical features. The rolling tide of trees continues over hills and valleys. The trees' ability to survive in extreme climes means that they are comfortable even on tall mountains.

Tourism

Look, I've been out there in dire straits ok? I've been the guy short on rations, heat packs, and endurance. I know how attractive a safe place to fill your belly and rest your head can seem. But if someone invites you in and you're not one hundred and ten percent sure they're human, believe me, you're better off hungry, exhausted, and cold. You step into that cozy looking cottage and you just might not step out.

The pines spread relentlessly, and a savvy traveler can interpret all sorts of interesting things just by paying attention to the trees. Areas where the trees don't grow, such as clearings, are usually exceptional in some way, and worthy of caution. Perhaps it is merely a campsite for Outriders or other travelers, or perhaps there is some magical disturbance that prevents the pines from regulating their temperature.
This is not to say that the tree line represents absolute safety. The pines make a hospitable home for many a creature. There are predators that lurk through the woods. Normally they hunt the sap drinkers and scavengers that survive off the land, but life outside the havens is hard enough on any creature to have long since discouraged pickiness regarding a meal.
In addition to the strictly bestial, there are spirits of the forest and the land that make their homes in the woods. An offer of shelter and food might seem attractive, but some of these creatures would like nothing better than to use you to fill out their soup
