The Emergence

The Conflict

Prelude

The Dread Lord, Zagrok, opened a portal to Mortas in hopes of conquering the land. Towns and villages burned, and the survivors dragged through the gate to meet a fate yet unknown. Nearby nations caught wind of the situation quickly and prepared their armies.

Deployment

First, the armies encircled the gate, weapons ready. The Demons fell back to defend, giving enough time for villagers to be evacuated before the coming battle.

Battlefield

An area spanning seventy seven miles around the gate, now known as the 'Demon Plains'.

Conditions

The Mortals had to drive the Demon forces back into Hell and hold off long enough for a gate to be erected in Mortas, covering the portal.

The Engagement

The armies marched forwards, using phalanx formations on the front lines, arches, mages and scorpions behind them, targeting winged Demons with ranged attacks. After 34 years trying to push back the tide, they eventually reached what is now called Templar's Landing, where the Thirteen Year Massacre took place. For the remainder of the war, Mortas's forces had to hold off inside of Hell itself, surrounded by enemy forces in temperatures not dissimilar to those of the Wyrm Dunes. Those who went inside had to fight stark naked for risk of burning inside of their own armour. For this reason, only the battle-mages of the Scimi Desert were sent inside, as their ability to armour themselves in weightless magical crystals, coupled with their natural immunity to heat made them able to fight exactly as they did in Mortas. They fought and died for thirteen years, constantly needing reinforcements, before at long last the gates were built and sealed.

Outcome

The world of Mortas was saved, and the raping of mortal women by the Demons led to the birth of a new race, the Incubi. Despite their Demonic heritage, their beauty and uncharacteristically good natures were enough to convince surviving women to keep and raise them. They are now fully integrated into Mortas's societies. The Templars were formed, an organisation who, at first, kept the Demons from tearing down the gate, but later spread all over Mortas, protecting civilians from monster threats.

Aftermath

The potential of a second Emergence gave inspiration to the current Emperor of the Red Dawn Empire to unite Mortas under his rule and slay Zagrok, ridding Mortas of the threat he imposes. The surrounding area was forever corrupted, forming the 'Demon Plains'.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The Emergence is regarded as the highest point of Mortalkind and the peak of what Mortals can accomplish when faced with a common enemy. On the anniversary of the gate's closing, thirteen days on non-stop celebration begin. Adults drink and shake hands with foes, while children play with wooden swords, helmets and demon masks. On the first day stories are told of events during the war, and at night children wear demon masks and go from door to door asking for sweets, while teenagers create whatever chaos they can.
