The Endeavor and The Albatross

Mr. Griffin told an electrifying story to the crew this evening. Gracious knows we needed a good distraction after that close call with the Navy ship, though I'm not sure if Mr. Griffin chose one with the most appropriate tone? Regardless, it was a fun little tale. Who knew that pirates had such a deep mythos about them- I wonder if this same legend is spoken of by military sailors? If they perhaps take it as a story of victory as opposed to a warning as we see it? How curious!

An entry in the personal journal of Elle Franklin.

Summary

The tale of the Endeavor is an ancient pirate legend known to just about anyone who has ever hoisted a sail. It describes the rise and fall of the ship Endeavor, a brutal thing with deep red sails and a vicious crew. Its captain knew nothing but success for years, as he conducted raids and attacks with great wit and tactic. The ship's infamy grew along with the crews' wealth, and soon there were many who feared the sight of red sails on the horizon.
At the height of their fame, however, everything changed for the crew of the Endeavor. There came a day when they spotted an easy mark, a small ship marked Albatross, and they raided it as viciously as they did every other. However, when the Endeavor's captain went to parlay with the captain of the Albatross, he was met with a grim omen: the man's eyes glowed a sickening purple, and he warned that the Endeavor's crew would suffer for their greed, and that the captain would watch them all perish before him. The man with the purple eyes and grim words was shot where he stood, and the crew of the Endeavor left to spend their prize.
However, the omen from the Albatross proved true, and the crew found themselves baffled when they spotted a gull with no sight of land for miles around. A great unnatural storm blew up, and one by one each member of the crew was dragged into the merciless sea. Only one man escaped, and he told their grim tale to an innkeeper once he washed ashore. He was found dead the next morning, eyes pecked out of his skull. To this day, the tale of the Endeavor is used to advise caution and mercy to those who may easily succumb to undue greed and violence.
