Lan-Bentii Redhull Ship

The most beautiful ship I've ever seen came to port in Seavale today. My brother would have my hide for saying it was nicer than his, but I know that even he would go a little slackjawed looking at this thing. I ran down from the lighthouse cottage just so I could watch the deckhands gawk at it while its crew brought it in, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't gawk a bit, too. I checked some records and apparently it's a ship from Bentii, a real fancy type for real fancy folk. I've no clue what some Bent noble is doing up here in Stell, but at least they did us all a favor by breaking up the monotony. I am a bit worried, though, that if they stay in Seavale Harbor for too long, they might find that all those baubles on the hull will be gone by the time they take off.

A note in the records of the Seavale Lighthouse, signed off by keeper Aron St. Beth.

Appearance

The Lan-Bentii redhull is truly marvelous to look at, even if it appears a bit hectic to the untrained eye. These ships are three-masted jackass-rigged barques, meaning that the mizzen mast (the one at the back) is fore-aft rigged, the mainmast (the one in the middle) is rigged square on top and fore-aft on bottom, and the foremast (the one at the front) is rigged completely square. Such an odd arrangement is a compromise between the strengths of both rigging styles, which allows for this type of ship to be quite dependable. In addition to the rigging, the hull is made out of extremely fine winesap wood from the lush forests of Bentii, which is what gives these ships their renowned deep red color. Winesap wood is sturdy but easily workable, which allows for these ships to be built in a particular shape that excels at cutting through waves and rough waters.

Any individual who owns a redhull ship is extremely wealthy, and they often try to demonstrate that as much as possibly by adorning their ships with bright metal decorations and ornate flags. This is fine for journeys where the ship is unlikely to leave the protection of the coastline, but as soon as a redhull sails into open waters, its an immediate and incredibly enticing target for pirates. As such, they often travel with large escorts of well armed defense ships whenever they need to leave the comfort of their harbor.
