Notes on certain Spells
No spell or Sphere ability is outright banned in this game, but some may have slightly different functions or are more limited than RAW to encourage players to explore the world and find different solutions instead, giving them more long term goals to pursue than simply finding someone to cast a simple spell to fix the situation.
Removing Conditions
Spells and abilities that remove conditions like diseases, poisons, enchantments or curses work like normal against common effects like natural diseases, common toxins, as well as spells and curses found on the list of spells for any class. There are however some cases where the spell alone is simply not enough. A magical disease might need both a Lesser Restoration and a Dispel Magic cast at the same time, a rare poison from a mythical beast might need a rare ingredient as part of the spell to remove the toxins entirely instead of merely delaying it, and some spells and curses may have a much more complex nature than a "one fits all" solution spell could overcome until the caster has learned more about the effect to adapt the spell accordingly. In these cases it's up to the players to either search for answers in the world, or try to come up with their own creative solutions to these problems.Identify
Same as with conditions, Identify and other spells or abilities used to gather information about a creature or object work like normal in common situations, but might not always be completely reliable when confronted with powerful magic. A legendary item containing a powerful curse might register as being cursed, but it's not guaranteed that you will gain detailed information on the curse's effects or how it works.Comprehend Languages
Spells and abilities that let you comprehend languages you are normally not proficient in work on all commonly spoken languages, including giving you an understanding of the meaning of metaphors etc. Languages that are considered "dead", are kept a secret within only select circles, or are generally very poorly understood by the majority of the world however can pose a challenge and you may lack the cultural background to truly understand their meaning. These abilities also do not give you the ability to understand languages you cannot perceive due to a lack of certain senses required, e.g. a keen sense of smell.Raise Dead and the Maim Rule
Spells and abilities like Revivify, which let you bring a fallen ally back from the dead within a limited number of turns work the same as before, with the addition that they can also be used to remove a severe injury that was the result of having gained a Maim Point effectively reducing the number of Maim Points the character has by one as long as it is cast on them within the same time frame. Spells and abilities like Raise Dead or Resurrection however, which let you bring a creature back from the dead after the time for Revivify has passed, are more complicated than RAW as the soul of the dead creature has already moved on and might not be willing or able to return depending on many factors. Furthermore, to give life, another life has to be taken in exchange, replacing any material components required normally, even if the ability normally would not have required materials. The creature sacrificed in this way does not have to be willing, but must be of similar size and power to the creature you are trying to bring back from the dead. Some creatures are powerful enough to defy this rule however, for example a phoenix giving its own life willingly as part of the spell can bring back just about anything short of the gods themselves.Plane Shift
There are no planes in the classical sense of the term in this world, and as such any spell that relates to the planes does either not work, or connects to a different realm - the Dreamscapes, a semi-real space in the ethereal realm, invisible and inaccessible to most mortals.Remove these ads.
