The Scourge, the Crimson Guard is named after the tabard its members wear - the moon and star of Hymbra on a blood red background.
Creation
The Crimson Guard was formed only 9 years ago in response to
The Scourge becoming more and more widespread. King Gottard II, the king of Hymbra, refuses to abandon his country and believes that he can get the growing curse under control and gird his kingdom against the constant wild assaults of the monsters. For the safety of his family, the warrior king created this elite unit of hand-picked loyal-till-the-death soldiers to form an inner defense of his palace, in addition to the usual soldiers.
Response and Fallout
The people of Hymbra rally behind the decision of their king to protect the royal family during these trying times, but the creation of the Crimson Guard has not gone without any negative repercussions. For example, some citizens are upset that the king has pulled the best soldiers away from the towns and cities where the threat of "death by scourge" is much more probable than in an already impenetrable palace.
The worst event to happen as a direct result of the formation of the Guard is that one of the soldiers succumbed to the curse and transformed into a scourge. The king's son, prince Aethelwulf, was killed by the beast before the rest of the Crimson Guard could cut down their former brother. The monster, the Guard noted, was significantly more formidable than most of the beasts haunting the countryside. In response to the murder of his son, King Gottard II required all guard to always be in groups and to slay anyone exhibiting any signs of transformation.
