Navigator

Sailing is not common on Morgrave, and for good reason. The seas of Morgrave are incredibly deadly, and not just because of the constant storms. Monsters live in the ocean. The deeper the water, the deadlier it becomes. Shallow waters are relatively safe (though coastal attacks by sea monsters are not altogether rare), but they have their own set of dangers: jagged cliffs, sharp rocks lurking just under the surface, coral reefs, and sand bars can all be disastrous for an expedition (though not as disastrous as being eaten by a sea monster).   Navigators are a rare breed. You need someone suicidally brave to confront these very real dangers on a daily basis - and here's the kicker, the job doesn't even pay well because sailing isn't very profitable. There are 2 types of navigators - those who love the ocean and want to spend time on it, and those who see the ocean as the ultimate challenge to conquer. In either case, any sane person would call a navigator a fool with no love for his life.   Still, just because they're mocked and undervalued doesn't mean they aren't valued at all. In the last hundred or so years, advances in naval technology has made merchant shipping in the Cauldron (the safest sea in Morgrave (still not very safe)) safe enough to be profitable. The Krachi, the Qemti, and the Lustrians all have ports on or near enough to the Cauldron that they've slowly begun doing more shipping - and each ship needs a navigator to avoid the dangers of the sea, both natural ones and pirates... and of course the pirates need their own navigators to chase down the merchant vessels.   The most common navigators are Drifters who wanted to explore every end of Morgrave, which includes the seas. Normally regarded as thieves and ne'er-do-wells, these Drifters have earned a grudging respect from the other races who see their value as experts in the ocean.
