Anura

Hunters and Trappers

The Anura are kith who appear to be humanoid amphibians - Two varieties exist: the larger, brawnier Bufos in the north and the smaller, poisonous Gruggas in the south. Bufos tend to be rotund and have thick, dull-colored skin covered in bulbous growths. They usually grow to around 4-5 feet tall. Gruggas, on the other hand, only grow to about 2-3 feet tall and are quite thin, at least compared to Bufos. They have bright, multicolored and fantastically patterned skin that produces a deadly poison. All Anura tend to live in wet freshwater biomes like swamps and rainforests, but there are some colonies of Anura in the grasslands of Qemt'Or and Lustria.   Most Anura spend their whole lives with their colony, but there are a few things that can get an Anura to leave: most notably, food. Anura are heavy eaters and it's their favorite thing to do. To maintain this lifestyle, they've become first rate hunters and trappers - in fact, oftentimes they've become too good and a whole colony must move when they depopulate an area of prey.

Following the Food

Anura are known for their relationship with food. On one hand, they are stigmatized for leaving miles of land devoid of life because of their willingness to eat absolutely anything at any time - especially Bufos, who are known to eat their own dead. On the other hand, Anura are considered the finest chefs in Morgrave and are coveted by high-end restaurants across the world.   Most Anura will stay with their colony for their whole life, but there are 3 common reasons why an Anura might leave - 1. To move to a city where a wider variety of food is available 2. to work as a chef in a restaurant or 3. to travel the world, looking for new delicacies to eat or new ingredients to use. Whenever an Anura leaves for one of these reasons, they are said to have "followed the food."

Masters of the Land

Both Bufos and Gruggas are excellent hunters of all forms - they set traps for prey, they hunt with a variety of ranged weapons, they fish, and they forage. However, some colonies of Anura have sought sustenance in another way. Following the lead of other kith, some Anura have moved into the fertile grasslands of Qemt'Or and Lustria and now farm for their food. Anura farms are different from the farms of other kith - Anura will eat anything, so they plant particularly fragrant fruits and trees to attract insects that they can eat as well as whatever produce they grow.
"They just showed up. Didn't say a word. Just set down what they were carrying and started digging. I thought the neighborly thing to do would be to bring 'em some of Brumba's apple pie - thought it'd feed the whole family, but one of 'em just ate it whole... barely even chewed. They keep mostly to themselves but we talk once in a while. They're decent sorts."
- Farmer in south-eastern Qemt'Or recounting his first meeting with his Grugga neighbors.

Secret Rituals

Anura usually strike other kith as simple people with an unhealthy obsession with food. This is more or less true, but there's something that most kith don't know about the Anura. Anura shaman perform holy rituals with mind altering drugs on a regular basis. On special nights, the whole colony joins in. No one knows what happens in these rituals - the Anura are tight lipped about the whole thing - but some travelers swear they've seen unholy things going on in the middle of the swamp on a full moon... Some say that these shaman can use magic, and it's not the magic of the gods...
"It was like your usual frog sounds, 'cept you could hear it from miles away. I saw the torchlight in the distance and, against my better judgment, I decided to take a look. Wish I hadn't. You ever wonder why every Bufo village has a stone slab in the center? I'll never set foot in another one, I can tell you that much."
- Borsch Guttwald, Hymbran adventurer

Names

Most Anura names are impossible to replicate by other kith. They consist of a series of chirrups and croaking noises. When dealing with other kith, Anura usually do one of four things: 1. adopt a name from another culture 2. try to sound out their name in a way other kith could replicate 3. make up a name out of random sounds or 4. force the kith to struggle to pronounce their Anura name. Anura has no writing system, so their written names try to replicate the noises in the common alphabet. All Anura in a colony share a "colony name," which comes before the given name.   Colony Names: Budda-budda, R'gurp, Chirra-chirra-brawgawg, Burra-burra, Durp.

Grugga villages, on the other hand, are usually built up in the trees - with or without ladders to get up. Decorations are sparse; most furniture tends to be utilitarian, but they are often decorated with scenes of Anura myths or of stories of the gods. Each village is home to one colony, and each colony may have up to 50 member before food starts to dwindle.
Warlocks: It's a closely guarded secret that the rumors of Anura have some merit to them - Anura end up as warlocks much more often than any other kith.
