Almiraj

The Almiraj is a legendary creature that is rumored to live in the Burning Sands, the hottest, least inhabitable region of the Rahim Wastes. Very few have actively explored the Burning Sands - temperatures can become fatiguing, debilitating, and deadly within hours of sunrise. Additionally, smaller oases are frequently covered up by shifting sand dunes and the dunes themselves can reach near mountainous heights, making navigation extremely difficult. However, some of those who have spent some time in the Burning Sands have reported seeing a strange creature in the distance.   They described seeing a creature with the bottom half of a centaur and the head and hide of a varanus and a long tooth jutting from its forehead - a Krachi merchant recently described it as a scaled unicorn, but of course the Rahim locals had never seen a unicorn. In the daylight, the Almiraj has been described as having a mirror-like reflection, catching the sun like a sheet of polished metal. As it moves, the color of it changes, from a silvery blue to a deep burnished orange, to an earthy copper, to the golden hue of the sun and the sand. At night, the Almiraj is reflective enough to catch the light of the moon, but it is more often discovered at night through its alleged magical abilities: the ability to call lightning and flame out of thin air. A flash in the cold desert night in enough to entice a weary traveler up to the top of a sand dune, whereupon they see the creature in the distance.   The Almiraj's existence is unconfirmed. The less superstitious locals doubted the testimony of tired and probably delirious wanderers. However, the reported sighting from a Krachi merchant who had no way of hearing of the creature made even the most pragmatic locals question the existence of the Almiraj. The travelers from the wetlands also brought tales of unicorns, similar-sounding creatures from the outside world. The Almiraj may or not exist, but its habitat makes it nearly impossible to confirm one way or the other.
