I remember the day the sky broke.
We heard the tales, the grim news traveling between each town. A demonic cult was creating a ritual to sacrifice our world to their dark lord, and worse they were nearing completion. But, these stories also brought hope, they spoke of a party of noble adventurers, heroes who might put an end to this threat. We waited in fearful hope, praying for our deliverance. It did not come.
They were too late to prevent it. We awoke on that fateful day to the sky pulsing, tears forming like a skin stretched to bursting, and we knew the end was near. As we cowered in fear though, there was feeling wihich passed over, and tears held still. The world rejoiced, believing its heroes stood victorious, and the greatest threat it ever faced was behind it. We could not have been more wrong.
Within a week people began changing, warping into living nightmares. It was then the surviving heroes returned and related the tale of their broken triumph. They arrived too late to stop the ritual, leaving only the option of ending the foul magic prematurely. The resulting explosion of corrupted magic left the entire plane tainted, exposing all life to massive corruption which was the cause of the mutations. Our only salvation from this calamity was the Nine Gods who descended and used their powers to create safe havens, the last bastions of uncorrupted land.
And there our story begins...
