Strain

Strains are, to simply put, stars. Each and every one of them are connected to a star found in the universe; it's been proven that they all have their paths determined by their own star. In this sense, Nether and Earth mirror themselves. What the strains do and why they do them show up in Earth's version as well, but as seemingly tiny blinks up in the sky that took years upon years to explore, and even more to explain why they move.
All the stars and constellations that have been watched and documented by humankind have their counterparts. One's position, brightness, mythological symbolism and so on aren't random. The reason for all of that is found in the strain themself. It is important for strains to keep up their work, as the balance would otherwise shift in both worlds.
Even though they're made from quintessence and come from the Nether, strains are, under normal circumstances, always found on Earth.
Strains have been categorized according to various aspects. These are: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, sigma, omega. The highest is alpha and the lowest is omega, although that doesn't necessarily rank them based them on power and strength.

Anatomy

On Earth, a strain looks as close to a human as it can get, similar to borderwalkers and ghouls. More often than not, they have another form that represent them which can differ greatly among individuals, but not all of them can actually turn into one.

History

For the majority of time, strains have not been looked at as actual beings with respect. Across most of the world, their sole existence has been forced to be all about their duties that they have to carry out, stripping them of any personality.
It's only thanks to the forming of the Northern Union and then its government winning over the country that changed it all. The reason for all of that was due to how strains were being treated. The people wanting to unite those locations and wanting a new society recognized strains as not tools, but as human beings. Now, it is illegal to force a strain to do what they don't want to do, and may live their lives as average people.
