South City

South City
South City is a medium-large city located in the southern portion of West Side Island. This city was founded 500 years ago as a result of the nearby West City's massive success. During the initial few years of South City's existence, it endured several hardships, including but not limited to droughts, disease, and a famine. Luckily for the citizens of South City, her neighboring settlements were more than willing to lend a hand.   As of today, South City's population hovers around 70,000. The city is split into five main districts: businesses, offices, entertainment, industrial, and residential. The residential district is by far the largest. It takes up the most space within the city limits and is bordered on its south and west by the office and entertainment districts, respectively. The industrial district is the smallest, but is the most densely packed. South City relies heavily on imports from other cities all over the world, and it exports very little. When it does, however, it is usually in the form of precious metals that can only be found within 10 miles of the city limits.   One notable thing about South City is its transportation system. The South City Subway, sometimes called the "Subterranean Speedway", was first laid out as a ten mile long railway cutting right through the middle of the city. This early subway was mostly serviced by long-outdated steam locomotives. These steam locomotives belched smoke and other pollution into the sky, and after about twenty years of this, South City was shrouded in clouds of grey all year round. It wasn't until thirty years after the railway was laid down that somebody realized what was going on.    Quickly, all trains were halted until further notice, and the rails were torn out of the ground. All trains currently in service were taken to a nearby rail yard and set aside for later use. For years, the air around South City was left to clear up naturally, and in the year 1659, the smog finally cleared up. During this time, however, South City's citizens suffered. There were no other methods of mass transit, and the buses at the time were no match for the daily onslaught of rush hour. So, work began to construct the current Subterranean Speedway. For another five years, workers labored and citizens groaned angrily, but it was completed in 1664.   The trains from the original 'subway' were brought out of retirement, and were used on the newer railway. However, problems soon arose. These old steam locomotives were too heavy for the new rails to handle, and as such, they began to bend. Luckily this was noticed quickly, and new electric trains were invented for use on the Speedway. The steamers were scrapped and a new way of transport rose from their ashes.   South City is very popular with the tourists, mostly due to its proximity to West City. Incoming travelers stayed in South City, whether it be in hotels or with family and friends, then left to go to West City. The city's government was well aware of this, and the entertainment district was expanded substantially. Now, many tourists and citizens report that the overall enjoyment level of their time in South City is 8/10.
