Gérouns

"Everything began and will end one-day thanks to Nélandra."   These are the first words about the Géroun divinity that we teach to children. Nélandra is the goddess of the era that started 250 years ago on Ménicea. According to the beliefs, she walked on the Géroun lands a few centuries ago, ending the neverending war climate of the time. She was born when the entire Menicean people were fighting in little clans.   Destined to rule the tribe where she was born, she understood through her conquests the distress of the Géroun people. The whole species risked self-extinction by neverending rampages and needed an immediate solution. Realizing this changed drastically the goddess' methods.   She started to use influence and speech while reserving violence for those who didn't know how to answer differently. Her revolutionary ideas seduced more than one; Who could say no to a golden age, where war is gone, and everyone's preoccupation is not to wonder if they will be alive the next morning?   The victory and expansion of her clan were unstoppable. Everyone fell, to words or blades. In a mere 20 years, Ménicea was conquered.   In the center of the continent, a few years before her death, a city was built in her name. Nélandra, the white town, would be the cradle of the ideas carried by the prophet who was owning this name. The City stood as the symbol of the virtues that lead to her success, she fought for the good of everyone.

Basic Information

Anatomy & Morphology

Fur

The first visible thing about Gérouns is their fur. Every individual has its own pattern and color that is a mix of its parents'. While most people don't really care about it, nobles however often admit that they give particular attention to fur in their search for love. They want their children to have beautiful colors and patterns.   The range of colors is the same as domestic cats' as well as thickness and patterns. During hot seasons, coats will lose in width and vice versa for cold seasons.   Still, it has been observed that in some regions with extreme climates such as the Frozen Plains or the Eastern Desert, the locals' fur became permanently thick or thin to protect from the cold or heat. This quirk, however, fades with time when people stay away from those regions for a long time.

Fangs and dentition

Géroun jaws present strong feline origins having a small snout, pointy canines, and incisors. Still, they remain tiny as they eat cooked meat and fish as well as vegetables.

Claws

Tiny but sharp, Géroun claws are vital tools in everyday life to them. They're used for cutting food, all kind of thin objects like paper and to write. Therefore, they need special care to be used so often. Gérouns sharpen their claws themselves and teach their kids to do it very young.   Even if they rarely use them to defend themselves, they still use them as a strong argument to prove their physical superiority to other species.

Paws and legs

Gérouns have roughly the same legs as humans do. However, they have smaller feet that look like feline paws. Since most Meniceans walk barefoot, they kept their bushings on their feet.   Their hands though look humanoïd. They have five fingers, and although they are covered with fur, their bushings grow smaller and smaller through generations.

Tail

Tails are essential for balance to Gérouns. They can measure up to one meter for the tallest and 50 centimeters for the smallest. They also have a significant role on Géroun body language as they reflect emotions such as interest, joy, anxiety, anger, fear...   Tail fur thickens under strong negative emotions when fighting or being afraid for example.

Ears

Gérouns have pointy ears on the top of their heads. They also play a role in body language as raised ears signify attention and awareness while low ears can mean submission, sadness, fatigue or pain.

Genetics and Reproduction

Gérouns share roughly the reproductive organs as humans. They have a ten month gestation period for one to two babies; Women often have one child per pregnancy but twins aren't rare among Gérouns. The odds to have twins are about 35%.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Gérouns are an omnivore species, eating both vegetables and meat. Among the Menicean people, the main dish is meat, from hunting or livestock.   They tend to eat a lot of Dlinhiapla, which are tiny featherless chickens found both wild and tamed.   When approaching the coast, fish becomes very common, maybe more than chicken. Its considered to be one of the most basic meals in the continent.   Regarding the hunt, Menicean people have strict rules and restrictions to regulate the animal population and avoid exterminations. They generally hunt in groups and share the benefices afterward.   They store dry food in warehouses for large towns, or in what they call a Common house when talking about small town or villages.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The Menicean society completely changed after the great war's ending. The significant aspects that might differ from overseas are the respect accorded to women thanks to Nélandra. They have the same rights as males on every side of the continent.   The social hierarchy though is clear enough.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

90% of the Gérouns are on Menicea. Only a few 10% are overseas since it's very difficult for them to leave their homeland because of the strict laws that surround departures.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Granted of the same 5 senses that humans have, Gérouns have a slightly better audition and nyctalopia. However, they are immune to magic. They can't use it or be targeted by a spell unless it is really powerful.

Gender Ideals

Males

Boys had a rough time after the end of the great clan wars as women took a much more important place than them thanks to Nélandra.   Nowadays, the expectations for males in Ménicea are to be supportive, they are often given manual jobs.   When their child just came to life, they are doing most of the job supporting their wives by taking care of the babies while women rest after their pregnancy.

Females

Women in Menicea are considered to be the managers of the people. They tend to do more intellectual work as most of Menicea's scientists and scholars are females.   They have to be strong-willed and caring, taking the example of their goddess.   In couples, females are often the ones who manage money and all the administrative stuff. They leave to males the exhausting physical tasks.

Relationship Ideals

Gérouns don't have the notion of eternity in engagement. Pushed by their search for happiness, they will, of course, pray for the one they share with their partner last as long as possible. Still, knowing how to self-question and move on when a union is no longer happy is also very important to them.   However, the union takes a different turn when the two partners have a child together. First, the engagement is the main prerequisite to procreate: having kids without a union isn't acceptable.   Then, parents engage themselves to provide everything so their baby can grow in the best conditions and so have to stay together until the kid reaches 14 years old when he'll go for his pilgrimage. After that, the parents are free again to break up at any moment as long as they don't have underage kids.   Finally, the union is prepared with a Colombe. Generally, all the family and friends of the couple will be invited. Unions are symbolized by a piece of jewelry with the name of the partner engraved on it.

Same-gender relationships

Since the Menicean religion is based on people's happiness, there's no particular stigma attached to non-straight relationships. Folks can be slightly surprised when seeing two persons of the same gender showing signs of affection, but no one will make a big deal out of it. As long as both partners are happy, nothing else really matters to Menicean people when it comes to relationships unless children are involved. Despite their acceptance of same-sex relationships, Gérouns still think that kids should be raised by a male and a female.   Yet, a lot of orphanages accept to let lone parents taking kids when they already have too much mouthes to feed. This allowed some gay couples to discreetly adopting children and gladly raising them.   Even if the religion never made a statement against them, they didn't officially approve it either. This, added to the fact that some parents are disappointed to not have grandkids, makes same-sex unions discreet. They can still marry each other since the Colombe isn't necessary for the ceremony, that can be done with the two lovers only, in front of an altar.

Prostitution

Brothels are allowed in Menicea, even if they are rare. However, there are stringent rules regarding contraception. Prostitutes should always be very careful to not get pregnant otherwise they might be forced to abort using painful and dangerous methods. Many women died after aborting their pregnancy.

History

At first, Gérouns thought that they were alone in the world. Their calendar starts 250 years ago when their goddess ended the neverending war of clans.   As long as they remember, they haven't seen another intelligent species in their whole history. So, when humans arrived for the first time a hundred years ago, centuries of beliefs and traditions got disrupted.   The people's response to doubt was pride. This strength to stay true to their values was determinant in the evolution of Géroun culture. Nowadays, they are known worldwide as a proud, careful and chauvinistic race that proudly hides its paradoxical curiosity for the unknown behind a thirst for knowledge.   To them, humans which they call "Sien-grissos" - Furless, are entirely inferior to them.

How can this even be a question? They have to protect against cold, got no claws or any natural weapon, and they're slow, Nélandra blesses them as they are slow. They have to cover all their weaknesses with tools that we only need in extreme cases.   It is nothing but a miracle that they managed to survive until now.
Of course, this contempt is roughly hidden, even if most Meniceans will call other species "Sien-grissos." With time, it surely lost some of its lousy meaning, yet a lot of people still tend to have an aggressive tone while using it.   Ironically, the gratin of the nobility and bourgeois are fond of overseas products. They pay a fortune for jewelry, food, and art that comes from human lands. To them, it's a way to show their open-mindedness and their wealth to buy such items.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

In the rest of the world, Gérouns are often in little groups, exploring areas with sparks of curiosity as they take notes of everything and spend lots of money eating there and here. However, if one group gets abused somewhere, the word will spread quickly among the traveling people, and you can be sure not to see Géroun travelers there soon again.   Politically, they tend to be friendly and defensive. They don't seem to have any eager to expand outside of Menicea, and they are cautious with aggressive-looking people that they will avoid. When a kingdom or empire gladly accepts to become friends, Gérouns will send ambassadors and will invite some in both capitals. Once their envoys scouted the area about what could be exciting merchants in Menicea, they will make all they can to build strong commercial relations. Even better, if the kingdom has modern infrastructures, they will generously pay artisans to come to modernize Menicea's.
