To'vah Species in Miurag | World Anvil

To'vah

The To’vah are a unique race of Miurag. These sentients have reached a demi-god understanding of their world and have bonded with the Ley to the point their native language is one of pure magic. They possess the greatest variance in the forms they may take and also have the lowest population.

Thus far, only male Dragons have made themselves known to the younger races. They are known to hoard and barter for gifts of crafted metal and jewels, especially those enchanted by other mages of Miurag. Male Dragons are also not opposed to bargaining for sex with other sentients.

General Appearance

The To’vah Draconic form is the most recognizable to the “young races” as a giant (potentially titanic) hard-scaled serpent often with sharp teeth, legs, and/or wings. They always have a tail in their Draconic form, and their eyes are typically a metallic color unless in a trance.

To’vah all learn how to shift their shape on the physical plane as well as the immaterial planes. To non-destructively interact with their world, they must learn to manipulate their aura as well, as their birth forms cause the greatest unrest and disruption among the sentient races.

Younger To’vah may be more limited in their forms but the eldest among them can take any form they wish, from a tiny insect to a behemoth of the ocean.

Culture and Heritage

The To’vah Dragons function in two ways which sometimes conflict: as an apex predator of immense, if primal, intelligence and as an insightful guardian of the natural balance in the Territory where they have the greatest influence.

Dragons do not tend to share Territories except under rare circumstances. In such cases, one is always the elder over the younger and, in time, they are likely to split a Territory to form new ones. Such transitions are always times of upheaval.

To’vah do not seem to grow old but gain ever-greater size, experience, and insight to wield expanding power within the boundaries of Miurag. They have also learned to make use of every moment of their time alive. Even though Dragons’ physical forms will sleep for long periods in their dens, their minds and essence remain active on other planes as Dreamwalkers.

The precise age of a To’vah only truly matters among themselves, for becoming elder to another To’vah is a hard-earned existence often resulting from catastrophic change followed by a long transition for their world.

Due to their low numbers and immense life span, To’vah do not have a collective culture but adapt more to the present culture of their Territory as it shifts with time. As a result, Dragons grow to become very different from each other; what persuades, appeases, or attracts one will not work for another. If Dragons could be said to have a culture, it would be a base set of rules agreed-upon which they each must follow to not impede the younger races from flourishing on Miurag.

Occasionally, a To’vah will sire a non-fertile, half-blood Dragonchild among one of the younger races, either as part of a bargain or as a deliberate action. These To'vah-krav are always planned and never an accident, as the half-bloods seem to serve some purpose to their elders.

All To’vah keep an eye on any Dragonchild who wanders into their Territory. If the hybrid seems likely to cause severe imbalance in their domain, the Dragon will approach in either physical form or as Dreamwalkers to either offer a warning or stage a magical conflict.

The tolerance for imbalanced behavior varies among Dragons and their Territories, but a consistently destructive To’vah-krav ignoring the words of elders and using their Draconic heritage to harm the younger races will be killed by a To’vah without regret. A half-Dragon cannot hide from a full one, either awake or asleep.

Magic

To’vah are capable of all affinities of magic. Due to their age and potential, their greatest feats of magic are only used in the ending of an era and are rarely witnessed by the young races.
