An invitation to my death

Sanul Stygbrugr was a famous late 3E bounty hunter and mercenary. He was a Human from a Jilsker mother and a Wood-Malen father. He grew up in Niinks where he quickly learned to fight. Even as a human he could keep up with the other Wood-Malen which gave him great prestige with his masters. When he was 13, a member of the Dag'nii warchief's circle noticed him sponsored him to go train and learn at one of the clan's academies. There he learned about many topics that could be of interest to him later in life. His teachers noted him to be "arrogant, but with the skills to back it up," and "smart, rarely overplaying his hand."   Later in his life, he joined up with a few Wood-Malen merc bands, fighting for the lords and ladies of the south. He earned quite a reputation there, rising to a high rank within the company of Zhekka. But when both his parents died while on a mission in Murtivia, he rushed back to his home to mourn them. After that he went on solo, mostly hunting bounties in the Querenth area. Using all the skills he had learned in life, he quickly became one of the top bounty hunters in Mithra. He was better than most humans and took more risky and boring contracts than any Malen. Not that malen were as welcome in Human settlements as they are today.

Rivalry

One other solo merc was really a rival for him. Or at least only one in the area he was active in. This was Doraen Redhill, a Querenthi mercenary who had trained under famous warriors like Discsi, Sehra the red Swallow, and Jouine of Simmersil. Although it was not a nasty rivalry, they both respected each other, it became a pretty intense race to the top. One would do a contract only the crazy Wood-Malen would, and the other one would do one even crazier. Doraen would take a contract on the famous Seven head king, and Sanul Stygbrugr would take on the blue-eyed ogre that had killed so many.

The end

Sanul's story ends exactly as you would expect from a man such as him. With a great battle, and a lot of sarcasm. When a nobleman from the Querenth area wanted a bodyguard, he chose Sanul. Sanul, after hearing this offer laughed, he wasn't a bodyguard and wouldn't even be for this pompous prick. The nobleman didn't take it well, as they usually do, and decided to put a bounty on Sanul's head. The bounty was so big, every merc in the area was out for his head. When he realized this, he knew he wasn't gonna survive this affair. He had, for once, overplayed his hand. And he knew it.   His plan was simple, gather whatever allies he could and make one last stand at a place he chose. There were 5 mercs who decided to honor their friend, and the six of them set out to the ruins of Kalta's fort where they set up to fight the other mercs. In a last effort to be witty, Sanul send out letters to every corner of the Querenth area titled, "an invitation to my death". He wasn't kidding himself, he knew he would die there. The letter told mercs to come to the ruins to take him out.   He held out for 2 weeks, his allies falling one by one. They took out some big names. Jiggis the gutless, Tan Gutter (a bit ironically named), Chiss, and many other names that are now forgotten. But in the end, he was the last one there. He took on a 12 men band and survived with only a scratch. Using the traps he had set up and the knowledge of the terrain he had, he took them out one by one. Sadly for him, there was one merc he knew he couldn't beat, Doraen Redhill. The fight was longer than most, but decisive. Sanul Stygbrugr was dead.
