Shengi Species in Misremembered Realms | World Anvil

Shengi

Shengi is something between a fungus and fruit. The smaller ones are about the size of a chicken's egg and the larger ones have been known to be about the size of a human head. They are usually roughly round or oval in shape and come in every color of the rainbow. Their outer layer is rough with meandering ridges and uneven divots. They are only found in the Dust Highlands buried in the sands. Specifically, they are most commonly found in small craters that are left by a passing storm. With the wind blowing the sand, the craters are usually filled in within a week or two, however, and they are much harder to find after that as they are usually buried beneath the sand. The larger ones are less common, but also easier to find because they are rarely buried complete. Instead the top quarter to half of the shengi sticks out above the sand making it much easier to spot. When unburied they are usually easy to spot as they glow brightly after a storm has passed. After a few days to a few weeks, depending on the size of the shengi, the glow slowly fades and they become dim again until the next storm passes.
In the center of each mushroom like fruit is a small crystalline "pit" similar to a peach, but crystalline in structure and glowing even more brightly than the fruit, and for longer. It is believed that these "pits" absorb some of the magic of a passing storm and store it somehow as they glow brightly to anything that can see magical auras. As they dim, some of that glow lessens, but even when completely dark to mundane sight, they still maintain a magical aura, though dimmer, for those who can perceive it.
