Idrasius
Wandering Warrior Idrasius
Idrasius is a wandering human warrior known as a folk hero in many towns and villages across the land. He makes a habit of visiting small towns and villages and ridding them of problems they can not handle on their own. He has saved towns from rampaging owlbears, rescued missing and kidnapped children, and once worked with a band of like-minded adventurers to rid a growing town of a war clan of goblins which was slowly killing off the town. To this day he wanders from place to place helping where he can, and never staying in any place too long.
There is a past he is not proud of, that he works hard to forget, however. Idrasius was once a town guard in a small town known as Laybyton. It was a walled town was of middling size with a small town guard. Though it suffered the occasional goblin raid, they were easily rebuffed rarely loosing more than some food and basic supplies. In his small town Idrasius was known as a peerless swordsman. He was very popular among the town and he enjoyed it thoroughly. He would frequently spend his free time and coin at the local tavern drinking and partying into the late hours. Usually this didn't cause any more of a problem than a rough time of guard duty the following day while he recovered from the effects of drink and insufficient sleep. One fateful day, however, when he had even more than his usual and not slept more than an hour he fell asleep at his post. He was manning the watch tower for the eastern gate, and as dusk was setting, it was time to close it, but in his slumber he left it open. Usually he would have another guard with him, but he had fallen ill that day and Idrasius had sent him home, assuring him that everything would be fine as always. It was unfortunately this day that the goblins would attack in force. It was not yet known, but a new leader had taken over the goblin community, and they had much more ambition than those before them.
Idrasius awoke to a cry from within the gates to see another guard calling the alarm. Realizing that the gate was open he went to shut it, but looking down from his perch he realized it was too late. Many were already in the town and more were joining them. By the time he closed the gate, he would only be trapping them inside. The goblins killed villagers they encountered, setting fires to the buildings they passed. It was a massacre and few survived. Idrasius tried to rally the guards and drive the goblins back, but they were caught unawares and overwhelmed. When he realized the fight was lost and his comrades dead he fled. Though wounded, he managed to get to safety and survive.
The few others who survived did not do so for long as they were taken prisoner by the goblins and never heard from again. The fate of Laybyton was seen as a tragedy and only Idrasius knows what truly happened there. To this day he refuses any drink and no longer lives for the praises of others, but remains in a town only long enough to solve some of their problems, if he can, and then move on to the next town, before he is tempted to return to his old ways and fail his people a second time.
