Anrilas

Anrilas (Elvish: "Flame of the King") is a magical sword forged by the Elves as part of a test to determne who would be the rightful King of the Men of Gonnarch. It has been an heirloom of the Kings of Gonnarch and is currently the chief weapon of David McKay, the HIgh King of the free lands of Mirydain.

Manufacturing process

The Elf-smiths of Trädvellir forged the sword Anrilas from Elven steel, forming the guard from gold and coating the hilt with fine leather. When the sword was complete, the Elves tempered it and then cooled in the stream of Glasswater. Afterwards, the Elves imbued the sword with magic power that could repel dark forces. The blade flashed with fire with every blow and could burn sword and armor away and even wound dragons with ease.

Significance

The sword Anrilas was forged by the Elves as a test to determine the man most fit to be King of Gonnarch. The sword was forged in Trädvellir by Elf smiths and imbued with magic power. With every blow it dealt, the sword blazed with flames and burned armor and weapons away. As long as its bearer wielded it in just causes, no one could stand against him.   King Isandor achieved the sword by pulling it from the tree which he tended to and restored, thus proving that he was worthy to be the first King of Gonnarch. He wielded Anrilas when he and his army defended the lands of Elves and Men from the Goblins and he slew their king in the final battle of the War of Men and Goblins, and it was used in battle by Isandor's line thereafter.   Following the death of Isandor’s last heir, King Idilieg, Glindor the Wise took the sword with him so no one could steal it, and then it was bequeathed to David McKay when he and his friend Ginny Langford came to Mirydain. With it, David led the Army of the Crown at the Battle of Kailion and defeated the Dark King, and the sword became his to keep.
