Historical Basis

There is not really one set story, but there are multiple recordings of these monsters. Because that is what they are classified under. They faded away into myth/legends when they suddenly disappeared out of the underground lands.

Crystal Gollum

The gollums are made of the finest crystal, and these monsters were known for hording crystals. And became extremely dangerous when somebody came near to their horde. They also killed dwarves and other races for their crystal jewelry. Which made them even more dangerous.

Prevention

During the time the gollums roamed the underground. The dwarves started to map out were the gollums gathered their hordes and they stayed clear from those inside the mines. Also, they took off their jewelry, before going in. Of course this was not always a guarantee that they would come back up.
