The Emerald Comet

The Emerald Comet is a comet that has been seen several times in the skies above Mirateia and each time the continent entered into a decade to century long calamity where cities would be destroyed and kingdoms and empires would fall.
When the comet was seen again in the year 436 it got interpreted as a warning that the Gods were angry, but because the earlier sightings where forgotten by most people no one really took it serious until a few decades later when the harvests around the continent began to fail and and plague began to spread and soon after civil war had spread to everywhere.

Localized Phenomena

The comet got its name from the emerald green colour of its tail when it flies through the sky. While the comet as a whole is seen as a messenger from the Gods who tells about death and destruction, it also have a more beautiful side to it because whenever the comet passes it passes about the Emerald Sea that begins to shine in an emerald green colour and sometimes the fishermen in the area, will have unusual good fishing season that year. That is by some believed to be the work of some of the more benevolent Gods.

History

The Emerald was believed to have first been observed in the year 436 during the reign of the ancient empire and it was interpreted as a warning that the Gods were angry.
A few decades after the comet had passed a scholar from Grand Duchy of Iceden found out by reading old texts that the comet had passed before and each time the continent of Mirateia had entered a relatively fast decline that would end in a continent-spanning disaster.
