Milky Way 37000 C.E.

Tens of thousands of years in the future, humans have long since discovered FTL travel, terraformed and settled thousands of worlds...and then proceeded to be people, like they always have.   This is a Milky Way populated by thousands of different - evolved or genetically-engineered - Strains of humanity, most from different planets or planetary systems, some wholly space-native, many hybrids between any of the above. There are civilizations limited to a single nation on a single planet, and empires spanning tens of worlds. There have been wars fracturing the galaxy, and conflicts that devastated their own corner of the universe but which nobody else ever heard of. There are all kinds of networked communications systems, nested within each other - and societies so isolated that they are unaware there is other life outside their own system at all.   But on the small scale, people - regardless of whether they have gills, or pointy ears, or computer chips in their brains - are still people, and they are the heart of this chaotic, glorious mess of a galaxy.
