Midnal

Welcome to Midnal, also known as the Material Plane, and home to the survivors of cataclysmic wars amongst the gods and the void that threatened to consume them. Yet were nothingness threatens to consume all, one can also find resistance. Staring oblivion in the face the gods and their creations fought back the hungry maws of beings beyond existence, and though the scars run deep they succeeded... to a degree. Though Midnal has been rebuilt the gods have ascended in order to protect themselves from the void, leaving their creations fate in their own hands. They may sometimes return to Midnal but only as a shell of their former selves, and they can only afford to provide divine assistance sparingly or indirectly through their most ardent followers. There are some that even claim such worship provides little benefit, but even if continued worship provides only a fraction of what it once did during the Age of Myths, the physical remains of the legacy and magic of the First Ones still impact their children.   Midnal is the central plane of existence, its life born from a mixture of the essence of the Elemental Planes and connected through magic to other planes of existence. While these other planes may cross or interact with Midnal it is the World Spirit that controls the flow. The unceasing arbiter of energy is what all the gods have become linked too. Though their goals and personalities are still unique and therefore they can come into conflict with one another, their existence is irrevocably tied to the World Spirit. The gods interact, grant power and impact Midnal through it, and as a result, it dampens their abilities to directly intervene. However, such a system was created out of necessity, for it hides them from the void and its denizens so they can maintain Midnal's existence.   Due to the existence of the World Spirit magic has also been affected. The most powerful magic has been lost or hidden. Improperly using certain types of magic can lead to deformities, death, or worse. Magic once utilized by the gods before their ascension or magic incorporated the erratic but powerful void is especially volatile. This does not mean one is incapable of learning how to be a powerful magic user. It does mean however that those truly powerful magic users and objects in certain societies are strictly controlled, trained and managed, and any people that would turn to unsavory or unapproved magic (especially that which would utilize the void) end up killed, exiled or arrested. It is the threat of the void, the Betrayers of the Second War of Heaven, and the loss of magical knolwedge to the ravages of time that has led magical artifacts and wondrous items from the age of the Gods to be coveted by those in Migdal. Very few now would truly be aware of this however.
