Caras castle

Standing proudly above the ramshackle town, Caras Castle provides the seat of power for the Arnaroquen (hereditary elected ruler of the Charter town). The castle has its own drawbridge which spans a defensive ditch (built to restrict the use of siege ladders). The ramparts are crenellated with the additional protection of temporary wooden hoardings being able to be added and held in place by slots in the wall. Within the gate, a small complex of buildings provide space for the town's administrators and house the small permanent garrison for the castle itself. Beyond these stands, an impressive three-tier building built around a central courtyard, this is the residence of the Arnaroquen but also house the great hall used for meetings of the electors and town judgements.

Purpose / Function

The castle serves three purposes: as the residence of the Arnaroquen and his family; as the main administrative building for Caras Celairnen and finally as a final redoubt should the town be attacked. The latter purpose has never been required; the former serves Bregol and his daughter Lindal (although Bregol has estates beyond the Uialduin). The main   Administration is mostly served by a small complex of buildings just within the castle gates.

Architecture

Thick granite walls of imported stone the castle is built in the ancient Arnorian tradition reflecting the architectural forms of Numenor wedded to the pragmatic needs of the Faithful. As such it shares similar features to the great fortresses of the both Arnor and Gondor such as Amon Sul.

History

In common with most of Caras Celairnen, the history of the site can be traced back to the second age - when the rock stood by a lake and was an elven settlement. Wide paved gardens occupied this site long after the elves had ceded the town to the mannish settlers who had come to live in the region. Later when the men of Numenor settled the region a small fort was built to act as a beacon garrison. With the founding of Arnor this was rebuilt to create the castle in its current configuration.
