Stahlburg

Stahlburg was a central hub for steel production and became very important to industrial development.   Early in its history, Stahlburg was an out of the way backwater. Its iron and coal mines supplied other smiths across the Empire and it was a town mostly defined by labour and exports.   With the rise of the steam engine, coal and steel both became immensely more valuable. Mines were expanded. Caravans departed daily. It became the heart of Dorveth industrialization. Boilers were built using Stahlburg steel. They were fired with Stahlburg coal. And they turned the machines powering the Dorveth economy.   For two centuries, Stahlburg stood as one of the most important cities in Dorve.   However, these days steel and steam are not the driving forces of the world economy. Today is not the time where a nation's wealth if valued only by the output of their factories.   As the service and investment industry took growing shares of the modern global economy, the city began to shrink in relevance.   The city, though still one of the larger cities in Dorve, is trying to come to terms with its identity in modern times. Large chunks of the city are filled with abandoned steelworks. Crowded suburbs now stand silent. The city is still alive, but there is no clear path into the future.

Government

At the Federal level, the city is divided into three electoral districts.   At the State level, it is divided into 8 ridings.   At the Municipal level, it is divided into 25 Wards. These wards elect people to the City Council and the leader of the City Council is the Mayor.

Industry & Trade

The coal industry of Stahlburg is almost entirely shut down in the modern era. With the rise of alternative power solutions, like nuclear and natural gas, coal is in very limited use.   Steel, though less valuable, is still an important commodity. Stahlburg is one of the largest exporters of steel in the world.

Infrastructure

The city, as a major exporter, is a rail hub for the region. There is an extensive network of passenger and freight rail lines across the city.   There was a canal that went through the city from before the invention of the railroad. It was left to disuse and was replaced with a highway when the automobile became a major mode of transportation.   There is a ring highway that goes around the city and the canal motorway provides access to the heart of the city. However, automobile access into the city itself is hard as the tightly packed blocks of the old city were not laid out with modern transportation in mind.   This difficulty of car access encourages heavy use of public transportation.   There is a subway that consists of three lines that goes across the city.   As the city is on the decline, the infrastructure is not in the best of shape. The buses are all older models. The subways are dirty. The highways have visible cracks.   There is an international airport, Watt International Airport, a couple of kilometres outside of the city limits.
