Republic of Namu
"Your life must be so chaotic, faceless one. Here in Namu, one's place in the world is clear, but in your country..." The assistant trailed off, and shivered briefly. "The people you see in the street could be anyone, but at least in Namu you know their purpose."
Excerpts from an Enkurine trader's journal
Structure
In the Republic of Namu, the Golden Mask is the executor of all laws decided upon by the Congregation of Silver. Each year, an individual is chosen from the Congregation of Silver - the collective of all Silver Masks within the Republic - to act as both a figurehead and executive for Namu.
The Congregation of Silver is formed from each of the Silver Masks - equivalent to mayors and barons - from across Namu. Their role is to formulate and debate the laws that govern the republic, and to present them to the Golden Mask once they have been accepted by a majority.
History
The Republic of Namu began its existence as a single clan amongst many in the south of Eira. This clan believed that in order to harness the abilities of the natural world around them, they should make themselves in the image of beasts. Whether or not they truly gained special powers from their primitive costumes, they were successful in a number of tribal conflicts, and began to grow in number to spread across south Eira.
As the clan expanded their beliefs shifted, and their masks and costumes became more elaborate and stylised in order to invoke the spirits of the creatures rather than their physical form.
Demography and Population
Around 405,000 individuals make up the Republic of Namu. In the East, amidst the green hills and scattered forests, Elves and Humans make up the vast majority. In addition, Western Namu maintains a significant population of Lizardfolk, natives of the dense jungle.
Territories
The Republic of Namu controls the southeastern tip of Eira. Its borders in the north are clearly defined by the commanding mountain and the Hamashi Delta, but the southern borders are less established, and border squabbles cool relations with the Kingdom of Enkur.
Foreign Relations
Diplomatic relations between Namu and the outside world are, for the most part, somewhat frosty. The tendency for other nations to go maskless causes a great deal of unease with most Namuans, so communications tend to be terse and restrained.
Trade occurs between Namu and Enkur, but formal diplomatic relations are somewhat stunted. Namu does retain a somewhat-friendly relationship with the inhabitants of the Southern Islands, who are used to both distrust from outsiders and a degree of mysticism in everyday life.
