Drake Salamander

The Drake Salamander is a large reptile that dwells primarily amidst the ashy slopes and cinder-drifts of Mount Gibil, on the Western edge of the great Enkuri Desert. As squat and cantankerous as they are, they are uniquely adapted to their unforgiving habitat.   The Drake Salamander is a large reptile, around five feet from nose to tail, and strikingly coloured, with ash-grey scales marred by bright orange streaks running across the top of their bodies and covering their undersides. This, in combination with their ability to spit smoke and embers from a gland beneath their tongue, gives the Drake Salamander the appearance of a wandering lava flow.   Scientific and arcane study of the gland reveals that it contains a reservoir of Fire Salts, most commonly found as a condensation of elemental energy from Inferno, the Elemental Plane of Fire. Quite how this extraplanar substance is found in the gullet of a planar native lizard has not yet been determined, though it has been theorised that these creatures in fact originate from Inferno, and have found the ash-covered wastes around Mount Gibil much like home.   This gland forms a key component of the Salamander's hunting and social behaviour. In order to hunt insects, these creatures work in tandem with another Drake Salamander to flush their prey from their nests amongst the ash. One Salamander positions itself at the entrance to an insect hive, waiting for the other to ready itself nearby. The first salamander will then spit flames into the hive through the entrance, and as the insects flee, they are quickly devoured by the waiting second Salamander. Once one hive has been depleted, the Salamanders then switch roles, ensuring that both get their fill. In this way, the Salamanders form a lifelong pair-bond, hunting and feeding with their mate.
