Screaming Crystal Condition in Miand'Mésvéstell | World Anvil

Screaming Crystal

It is a shocking disease.

"Aaaahhhhhh! Aaaahhhhhh....!
— An Obsidian Blitz, who stops screaming and starts weeping quietly somewhere nearby in a dark hallway.

General

One of the most enigmatic pathogens that exist within the thick metallic shell of Craesto Welk is one known as Screaming Crystal. A terrible disease that affect an afflicted both mentally and phsycially. Experincing it is said to be pure agony, due to the electrical shocks that surges forth through their blood veins at irregular interwalls.

The namesake

Approximaetly 72 Hours after becoming infected, the skin of the afflicted will bilge outward to form outgrowths akin to big warts.
After 42 Hours, these wart-like outgrowths will harden into a black, crystalline material.
The pain of this process is what reduces the afflicted into weeping, half-mad wrecks that unpredictably will start to scream from time to time.

The Screaming Level

Every infected found is quickly rounded up and sent to the Screaming Level, formerly known as Level 56. Most of those who are sent there die there, but all afflicted will have an 8 % chance of surviving the disease.
If these survivors aren't then later killed by starvation or dehydration, or by Feral Obsidian Blitzers, then they need to travel to either Level 55 or 57. This has a 15 % chance of success, as the Screaming Level is heavily patrolled by ATERUN:s and Enforcers who have been instructed to either capture or kill, depending on what attempts to exit the Level.

Blitzers

The survivors of Screaming Crystals are known as Blitzers. These specimens have been established as Valuable by the Craesto Authority and are to be captured alive for further study if possible.
The reason for why they are Valuable is not only due to their incredible rarity, but also due to them possessing a stable variant of the Screaming Crystal's electrical charge ability that manifests from the crystallized outgrowths. The Blitzers can utilize these charges offensively and defensively, both at long range and close range.
It is due to this that 93 % of all Blitzers live in hiding, hunted. Only 3 % choose to join the Craesto Authority, while the remaining 4 % choose to fight against it.

Spread

Screaming Crystal is believed to spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Nothing is concreate, however, as some specimens appear to spread solely from physical touch. Further study is required.

Origin

The origin of Screaming Crystal is vague at best. A majority of the civilian population believes that it was synthetically created by the Craesto Authority, though for what purpose no one is quite sure. Some say it was an attempt to gain access to the mythical magical powers of the long lost Homeworld of Mésvéstell, but that it backfired. Others that it was a simple quelling disease that mutated due to the radioactive energies of the empty void beyond the metallic shell of Craesto Welk.

Screamers, Fobs, Blitzers, Chargers
Fobs — or Feral Obsidian Blitzers — are usually those who are in the final stage of the disease. Driven mad by the agony of their affliction, they are more ravaging animals than humans. They have a habit of attacking any living being that comes near them and there have even been documented to attack patrolling ATERUN:s.   They also have a deadly habit of unleashing electrical charges unto their opponents, which will most of the time turn them into burning husks of meat, which will be promptly devoured by the Fob in a fit of madness.
