Apteron Arratay is a member of the Anvilites’ Guild and is one of those who stand for the evening entertainment at the World Ends Inn, where he is a regular. He also looks over those who are hurt, both physically and mentally and tries to help them as best he can with his soothing singing.
Formerly from a Miand'Més Alteration — one that is suspected to be the same one as Dhelian Lethea originates from — that was in the midst of a great war, he arrived to the City of Concord through a nondescript Teleportation Door along with a badly hurt war refuge named Ellandra Karyo who he attempted to rescue from his formerly comrades in arms.
Soon, he and Ellandra stumbled upon Dhelian Lethea and Qurilion De'Sparc who had ventured into the Sewers of Concord to explore and map out its many passageways. They quickly took them to the Concordian Hospital for recovery and thanks to Apteron’s Soothsinging, Ellandra survived, though she became bedridden for several months.
Some days after taking Apteron and Ellandra to the Hospital, Dhelian Lethea, accompanied by Evelyn Arcasai the Bouncer, approached him and gave him a proposal of joining their Guild. After some additional days of contemplation, he accepted the offer and asked about Ellandra. Would she too be offered to join the Guild? Only time would tell, they responded.
As a person, Apteron can appear unorganized at times, though he does his best to think through his decisions before he acts, as well as looking at both sides of any conflict.
Unfortunately, sometimes sides need to be taken and wrong choices are expected to happen. When this occurs, pain and suffering have a strong chance of being inflicted, even if it is accidental.
He has grown protective of those he cares for due to some poor life choices in his youth, and seeing the horrors of war and betrayal has deepened his dislike against violence so much that it might border on hatred. This does not mean he is a complete pacifist, however, and those that enrage him quickly realize that he is a dangerous opponent.
Apteron is rather tall for a Battlebred, though not as well-muscled as many others of his kind but that does not mean he is a weakling either. His silver eyes are hidden behind his dark, green-colored glasses that both protect them against strong lights and helps against his nearsightedness.
He has short-cropped, brown hair with a cowlick on the front left, and his skin is of a light grey-blue shade.
Apteron is usually dressed in a short-sleeved, blue tunic underneath a simple light-green vest with bronze buttons. Over that he wears a dark-shaded jacket with silver embroidery on its arms. He also wears deerskin moccasins and comfortable pants.
Apteron keeps his violin case with him at all times, typically slung across his back. The violin itself was a gift from Ellandra after he and she had begun a friendship in earnest.
Apparently, she had asked some at the Inn what he might like to have and it was something the other members were glad to assist with. The weeks following the question had been very confusing for Apteron, with how all the other Anvilites prodded him with questions about his likes and dislikes.
The quarterstaff was a gift Apteron received from Leno the Handyman sometime after he became a full-time member. Seemingly made from a sort of bamboo reminiscent to that of Leno’s broom and Pand the Innkeeper's bludgeon, it is as tough as steel. In the hands of someone who knows how to use it, it can be a very efficient offensive and defensive tool and luckily, Apteron received some training from an acquaintance of Leno that left him sore and blue every day for nearly over a year. He would have been fairing worse if not for his training in the army and his natural regenerative abilities.
He owns a small, leatherbound notebook that he writes important things in to remember later. He also writes down some of his darker thoughts to keep them away from his inner, darker beast.
In the Guild, as previously mentioned, Apteron takes care of the sick and wounded whenever he can. Due to his capabilities and experience with Corporialism, he has become an important Anvilite and subsequently a Citizen, as he lends his services to the Concordian Hospital whenever there is a crisis.
Reading and visiting the Archive
In his free time, Apteron enjoys reading books and he helps Thei the Researcher look over the library at the Inn. He occasionally also travels to the Great Archive in search of new reading material or to just admire the beauty of the place. He is mostly drawn to those that touch upon healing and medicine.
While the Visitors fascinate him, he does his best to keeps his distance from them like any other temporary, ordinary and wise visitor would. The other native inhabitants of the Archive have so far ignored him, though when it has been a necessity, he has asked a Librarian for directions. The Archivist Himself he has only seen from a distance, seemingly discussing something with a Visitor.
Playing the Violin
One activity Apteron usually does in the evening hours, is playing the violin at the Inn. He is one of those who most often stands for entertainment when the sun has gone down and the Inn is filled with conversing Anvilites. He is often accompanied by Morgan the Bounty Hunter and Leo the Painter and together they make for a good musical band.
OApteron always ends and begins the day by meditating for an hour or so. It keeps his mind clear and the beast within calm. If one were nearby during a meditation session one would also hear a soothing humming, and it calms nerves and eases headaches. Both for Apteron himself and those in his proximity.
The berserker state
If there is one thing Apteron fear greatly, it is his Berserker state he was “blessed” with. It aided him well in battle but dulled his more conscious side. For a long time, he turned his back on his more humane side and embraced his inner beast.
A part of him, however, always felt his actions were wrong and the slaughter of an entire refugee camp in hiding, and the near-death of Ellandra Karyo, became the final nail in the coffin as it cleared his clouded mind. In response to this, he betrayed his former comrades in arms and saved a future one in need.
The fear of entering this Berserker Haze — or becoming Blood Blind, as it is also called — is what has made Apteron stay out of conflicts that might turn ugly. Fortunately, thanks to the aid of his comrades, he has managed to hold back the impulses that trigger the berserker state. Meditation and breathing techniques have helped a great deal as well.
Towards Ellandra Karyo
Towards Apteron Arratay
They first met when Apteron and his comrades in arms stumbled upon a refuge camp in hiding. Acting on orders, all but one of the refugees survived till the end. And that was Ellandra. But after years of being in a berserker haze, Apteron finally snapped out of it after seeing all the dead at his feet. Killing one of his own and using his more taboo abilities he took Ellandra and fleed further down into the sewers. They both escaped when they ventured through a Teleportation Door into the Sewers of Concord. Around four years afterwards, when Apteron had become a highly respected member of the Anvilites' Guild and Ellandra a Concoridan Knight in training after some years as a bounty hunter, he approached her with a proposal of joining the Guild. However, for reasons that Apteron had a hard time understanding, she could only join them if she became his Apprentice. That way, she would be a partial member of the Guild and could continue her training within the Concordian Knights. She would have a room at the Inn and could use most of the benefits of a full-fledged member.
